Our spies have snapped a prototype of the updated BMW 1-series and despite BMW’s trademark hypnotic paint job the new model clearly reveals its shape.

Although the basic shape of the 1-series appears to remain relatively untouched, the front end gets a more upright look and the kidney grilles and headlights from the 5-series GT are likely to make an appearance.

As well as the five-door hatchback pictured here the new 1-series model range may feature a shooting-brake-style two-door estate/hatchback crossover similar to the MINI Clubman. These practical but sporty looking models are gaining popularity among buyers who want space for two adults in the back without sacrificing style.

Sources have also revealed that engines would range from 1.4-litres to 3.0-litres. Turbos will most likely be in the offering but an M version is unlikely. Instead, BMW will concentrate on green models such as low-emissions diesels and hybrids.
