He's back! Michael Schumacher will make a shock return to Formula One, substituting for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, Auto Express can reveal.
The seven-time world champion – who retired at the end of 2006 – has committed to driving for Ferrari at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 23 August.
Schumacher, who is contracted to Ferrari and acts as an advisor to the team, said: "For team loyalty reasons I can't ignore this unfortunate situation."
The German legend has been chosen over test drivers Marc Gene and Luca Badoer while Massa continues to recover in hospital after fracturing his skull when he was hit by a spring during qualifying for the Hungarian GP.
Schumacher apparently hasn't driven a Formula One car since April 2008, and because of the testing ban, will not be able to drive the 2009 Ferrari F1 car until first practice at Valencia.
"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," said the Italian company.
"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand Prix."
