Lexus is working on a rival to Audi’s A3 and the BMW 1-Series – and it looks likely to feature hybrid-only powertrains.
Insider reports suggest that the model – pictured here as a concept in an official sketch – will ditch standard petrol and diesel engines to use the eco technology.
It’s a natural move for the Japanese brand, as parent company Toyota has pioneered the use of hybrid systems on cars such as its own Prius as well as Lexus’ RX sports utility vehicle and LS and GS saloons.
The news is set to be confirmed at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, where the prototype will make its world debut.
Insiders say the production version will appear at next March’s Geneva expo and go on sale in the UK in 12 months.
As yet, there’s no clue on what the car will be called. A small Lexus has been on the cards for some time, as the firm has never competed in the growing premium hatch segment. Designed to sit below the IS range, the newcomer will satisfy customers looking for a high level of standard kit in a more compact package.
