Mercedes is to launch the most frugal supersaloon ever – a four-cylinder hybrid S-Class.
The luxury four-door will mate the 2.2-litre diesel from the C and E-Class with an electric motor.
An insider said: “The S-Class will adopt the 250 CDI engine, as well as a lithium-ion hybrid powertrain, to boost power and lower emissions.”
It’s based on the S300 Bluetec concept, seen in 2007, and should deliver 45mpg economy and 140g/km of CO2.
The newcomer is set to appear at Frankfurt, and sources claim there’s also an ultra-frugal, three-cylinder C-Class model in the pipeline.
