MINI E arrives in UK

MINI might be celebrating it's 50th birthday, but its sights are set firmly on the future. The BMW-owned firm has announcement that it is looking for test-drivers to take on it's new electric car, the MINI E.

Up to 40 examples will be leased for six months from December this year, followed by a second round of applications in 2010 - allowing a further 20 drivers to lease a MINI E.

Unfortunately, helping to save the planet doesn't come for free; the monthly lease on the car is £330 (down from £550 through government funding) but MINI claim that that's not a bad deal considering VAT, insurance and maintenance are included and a recharge with off-peak electricity will cost just £1.50.

However, paying out £330 a month isn't the only thing you'll have to trade off to gain a MINI E; the electric drivetrain takes up a lot of space in the cabin meaning there's only two seats and limited boot space. Meanwhile, with an optimum range of 155 miles (falling to 104 miles under normal driving conditions), the electric MINI isn't ideal for long journeys. However, if you're willing to accept its shortcomings the MINI E experience is an exciting project to be part of.

All applicants must live in the South East of England and have a private garage or parking space to allow a high power charging unit, capable of charging the MINI E in 4.5 hours, to be installed. An adaptor for an ordinary wall socket is provided but this provides a lengthy 10-hour charge time.
