Take a look at Mitsubishi’s outlandish electric concept! This futuristic SUV is set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, and goes on sale next year.
The PX-MiEV is based on the Outlander SUV, but with a wider, shorter body. It’s powered by Mitsubishi’s latest take on plug-in hybrid technology.
Unlike the Toyota Prius, in which the petrol engine and electric motor work together to turn the wheels, the PX-MiEV is essentially a fully electric car with an engine on board to charge the batteries when they’re running low.
Regenerative braking also helps keep the cells topped up, while owners can carry out a full charge using a standard household socket.
The 1.6-litre petrol engine kicks in only when sensors detect battery charge is low; it runs at a constant and efficient speed to revive them.
This set-up enables much longer periods of electric-only driving. As a result, Mitsubishi claims the car will return the equivalent of 117mpg – not bad for a full-size off-roader.
While power outputs have yet to be confirmed, drive is sent to all four wheels by means of an electric motor on each axle.
Plus, the new car will be as entertaining as it is eco-friendly. Mitsubishi has fitted the Evo X’s Active Yaw Control set-up – which sends more torque to the rear wheel that has greater grip –to improve the handling.
