Small cars have a big future – that is the message from Suzuki as it gears up for the Tokyo Motor Show.
The firm plans to put four new models in the spotlight, including a revised Wagon R. There’s also a new Alto concept, which gets a stylish makeover, a higher-quality interior and improved performance.
A Swift Hybrid, meanwhile, has lithium-ion batteries – recharged via its 660cc engine – and an electric motor that drives the car. Aimed at commuters, the Swift can also be boosted from the mains.
By far the most colourful concept due to grace the stand, however, is the SX4-FCV. It combines a GM-built high-performance fuel cell and a Suzuki-developed 700-bar hydrogen tank, and as the drivetrain is lighter and more compact than before, it promises better handling and performance than the previous SX4-FCV.
Suzuki is currently testing the car in Japan, and expects to introduce it on to the market soon.
Also premiering will be three new motorcycles, including the Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter, which is fitted with the bike world’s first 700-bar hydrogen tank.
Completing the firm’s stand line-up is the new Mio powered wheelchair.
It has ‘direct methanol fuel cells’ and promises a revolution in mobility – by using methanol, the wheelchair can employ easily replaceable fuel cartridges.
