Take a look at Toyota’s vision of the future. Called the FT-EV II (Future Toyota Electric Vehicle II), this clever compact concept is based on the iQ city car but has been specifically designed for short-distance, zero-emissions travel.
Perfect for cities, it will have a range of around 60 miles on a full charge of its lithium-ion batteries, and a 62mph top speed. In keeping with the iQ’s philosophy, packaging is very impressive, too. Measuring only 2,730mm in length, 1,680mm in width and 1,490mm in height, the FT-EV II is even shorter than the iQ but is still claimed to have room for four.
The firm has also shunned the traditional pedal layout in favour of a more futuristic approach. A joystick operates all the main controls including the accelerator, brakes and steering, creating more legroom for front passengers.
Other features include an additional window below the level of the windscreen to provide improved visibility, as well as electric sliding doors on both sides to ensure easy cabin access in tight spots.
The FT-EV II will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, and although Toyota hasn’t confirmed a launch date, our sources indicate that a production version could be ready by 2012.
