The world’s largest Audi centre opened its doors to a host of celebrities in London last week – but it was the company’s stunning new R8 V10 Spyder that proved the star attraction.
And where better to debut the firm’s flagship drop-top than at the launch of the enormous 190,000 sq ft glass-fronted structure, which cost a whopping £45million and six years to build?
The huge investment – made at a time when most makers are tightening their belts – didn’t stop Audi from splashing out on a lavish party to mark the showroom’s launch, either.
Among the guests were chef Gordon Ramsay, musician Jay Kay and the Audi Quattro-loving cast of TV’s Ashes to Ashes.
Standing seven storeys high – and featuring three showroom floors capable of displaying up to 116 cars – there was plenty to keep them entertained, too.
But all eyes were on the R8 Spyder, as the covers were lifted to reveal the model in all its gleaming red glory. Based on the 525bhp 5.2-litre FSI firebreather, the newcomer sports a fully automatic lightweight fabric hood, which takes 19 seconds to operate at speeds of up to 31mph.
A body which features additional carbon fibre panels also helps to keep the weight down. Standard equipment includes all-LED headlights, a Nappa leather interior, plus a new seatbelt-mounted microphone for in-car calls even with the top down.
The V10 engine produces 530Nm of torque, allowing the Spyder to dispatch the 0-60mph sprint in 4.1 seconds. The car is available with a six-speed manual gearbox or R tronic automated manual, and order books open next month. Prices start at £109,580 or £114,670 respectively.Â
