Never mind inner-city crime... what about inner-village? Residents of the Cleveland hamlet of Wingate near Hartlepool were more badly hit by vehicle-related theft than any other area outside London, a recent survey has discovered.

The moneysupermarket.com study revealed 3.7 per cent of its residents made a claim in the 12 months to August, compared with the national average of just 1.17 per cent. Chislehurst in Bromley, south London, topped the theft league, at four per cent.

The postcode survey assessed 3.8 million insurance quotes generated over the last year. The latest British Crime Survey, however, says up to one in 15 UK residents have suffered a vehicle- related theft over the last year, while one in 158 have had their car stolen.
