…And it’s bigger, better for Beetle

Much improved Beetle on the way?

New VW Beetle on the way

16th October 2009

While some VW models are getting smaller, another is getting bigger! Auto Express has learned that the German maker is planning a new, larger version of the legendary Beetle.

We've mentioned before that top brass were working on a more masculine and sporty replacement for the car. And now, it appears that size is on the agenda, too. VW’s US boss, Stefan Jacoby, has been reported as saying that he wants the new model to address criticism of the current Beetle’s limited rear seat space – so a roomier replacement is on the cards.

As well as improved packaging, Jacoby intends the Beetle to “be more of a halo car” – in other words, a truly desirable flagship. Stylists at VW have already submitted proposals for how the new Beetle will look, and design boss Walter de’Silva has been quoted as saying it will be a big step forward.

It’s set to take its cues from the 2005 Ragster concept car, losing the curvy roofline in favour of a lower and sportier look. Expect to see the new model within the next 18 months.
