It's the car that will make Toyota cool – so says company boss Akio Toyoda. As he took the wraps off the FT-86 – the eagerly awaited replacement for the Celica – at the Tokyo Motor Show, he claimed sporty models such as the rear-driven coupé will change his firm’s image.
Power comes from a 200bhp 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine sourced from Subaru – Toyota’s partner in the joint venture.
As a result, the FT-86 should cover 0-60mph in less than seven seconds and hit 140mph. Under the skin is the platform from Subaru’s Legacy, although the car features modified springs, brakes, dampers and steering, to ensure strong handling.
The production version is set to cost around £25,000 when it arrives in showrooms in 2012.
