Bosses at Nissan are planning an electric revolution! Senior vice president Andy Palmer has revealed to Auto Express that the firm is working with the Government, utility companies and regional development agencies to increase the number of quick charge points for electric cars.
The high-voltage outlets are planned for cities such as London, Newcastle, Birmingham and Liverpool, as well as service stations along the M1, creating an ‘electric corridor’. Further details will be revealed early next year, but the outlets can charge the batteries of Nissan’s Leaf electric car to 80 per cent capacity in 20 minutes.
Palmer disclosed that the battery models will have synthesized engine noises. A sound has been selected to indicate that the battery and electric motor are on – but he wouldn’t say what it was. Such a system could help pedestrians hear approaching cars.
Partner firm Renault, which is set to launch a range of electric models in 2011, could also adopt the system.
