Green stunners in LA limelight

Zero-emission Audi, Honda, Nissan debut; Designs show what we’ll drive in 20 years

MAZDA Souga

Buyers of the Souga will be able to design their car in virtual reality, with the help of an expert in the technology.

The Los Angeles Motor Show will be going back to the future! Design teams from the world’s largest car manufacturers will use next month’s expo to showcase concepts they think will grace our roads in two decades’ time.

Entries for the Youthmobile 2030 Design Challenge come from Audi, GM, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. The motor manufacturers have drawn up their own unique take on what young people will want from their vehicles in the year 2030.

Mazda’s Souga (middle car) is aimed at a new generation of young entrepreneurs, aged 16-25, who will design and interact with their motor in a virtual world before making their final purchase.

Other studies take car ownership to a new level. The Honda Helix will even go as far as integrating a buyer’s DNA into the model’s construction, enabling it to change shape and colour.

The current trend for environmentally friendly cars will continue long into the future, but zero-emission designs – that incorporate energy recuperation systems – aren’t too far away from current technology.

All entries will be judged by a team of experts, with the winner to be announced at the LA Motor Show on 3 December.
