The wraps are being peeled away from BMW's new 3-Series! These are the first spy shots of the all-new car which is set to be one of the company's biggest sellers.
This prototype was spotted in Germany. While the comprehensive camouflage makes it difficult to get much of an idea about the styling, the shape is sleeker and sportier. BMW is keen to improve the model’s drag coefficient to cut fuel consumption and emissions, so active aerodynamic systems that channel air around the front are being employed.
Under the skin will be a host of new engines, including three-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel units. As usual, these send power to the rear wheels. The 1.5-litre units are effectively formed from half of BMW’s new 3.0-litre six-cylinder, and give around 150bhp in oil-burning trim.
An eight-speed automatic box is likely to be offered, and it’s possible the low-capacity engine could be paired to a range-extending electric motor, mounted on the rear axle. Other ‘green’ features are set to include low-rolling-resistance tyres, a stop-start ignition set-up and a regenerative braking system.
The latest 3-Series is due to reach dealers in 2011, with buyers getting a choice of saloon, GT hatchback, estate, coupé and convertible bodystyles.
