This is what a car designed by 2,900 people looks like! Named the Rally Fighter, it’s the first model from new US company Local Motors, and it is slated to be the world’s first ever ‘crowd-sourced’ vehicle.
Each major part of the car, from exterior to interior and even its name, was developed in an online ‘open source’ process, chosen by Local Motors’ members. Special contests were held, and those who came up with the best and most significant ideas won cash prizes.
But that’s not the only off-the-wall idea behind the model: the rugged off-roader will be built in ‘micro-factories’ at the firm’s base in Massachusetts – as well as in Arizona, where it is most likely to be used – hence the Local Motors name. One of the brand’s aims is to develop designs which are based on regional tastes and needs. What’s more, prospective owners will be given the chance to go to the plants to build their own vehicle.
The Rally Fighter uses the 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel powerplant from BMW’s 335d to send 265bhp and 576Nm of torque to the rear wheels. And thanks to its spartan cabin and comparatively low 1,400kg weight, it’s capable of more than 30mpg, even off-road.
The firm is now taking deposits ahead of production in 2010 or 2011. The Rally Fighter is expected to sell for ,000 (around £30,000).
