It's official – BMW’s five has arrived! Previously we brought you a sneak preview of the exciting new 5-Series. But now, the covers are off.
This teaser image was released with first official details as we went to press. Now all the info and pictures are available at the autoexpress.co.uk website, following the car’s world premiere on Monday 23 November.
As you can see from our pictures, the saloon won’t be short on style. Thanks to smoother lines and a more conservative shape, the new 5 isn’t as awkward as the previous generation – and it’s much more pleasing on the eye.
There’s been a makeover inside, too, and the car now shares its cabin layout with the similarly sized 5-Series GT. But the biggest improvements have been made under the skin.
Â
Stop-start will initially be fitted to all four-cylinder engines, with six-cylinder versions getting the technology soon after. That will cut emissions by up to 15 per cent.
A new range of eco engines is also set to debut. Petrol highlights include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, delivering 175bhp, for the 520i. The greenest model will be the 177bhp 520d EfficientDynamics diesel. It promises a sub-120g/km CO2 output and great economy.
Strong driver appeal will also come as standard. BMW has fitted four-wheel steering as it focuses on making this the best 5-Series ever.
Production is already well underway, and the firm marked a milestone as the 5,555,555th 5-Series rolled off the line since the original’s launch in 1972.

WOW that car looks so different....... did I manage to say that with a straight face? .....
What is that black dot to the left of the nearside front wheelarch?? Surely not a park sensor that isn't colour-coordinated? Is this a pre-production model?
I retract my previous inquiry - it's a side-view camera that is currently a feature of the 7 Series - well done to BMW for allowing this impressive technology to filter down the range...
Just beat me to it! Side view cameras, a great bit of tech. Also credit where it is due, 175bhp & 177bhp from the 2.0 petrol & diesel engines respectively is impressive!
Is there a more powerful production naturally aspirated engine availiable?
Thank God Chris "Bungle" has left BMW.Maybe now they will get back to designing cars with style!
Erm, presumably since only the front end has been revealed they haven't actually built the rest of it yet lol. This image isn't giving much away is it.
Range of engines sounds good though. As GMR mentioned 175 and 177 bhp from 2.0 litres is pretty impressive.
Style is always subjective, but my opinion is that it looks great.
Minor tweaks on the outgoing 5 with a major improvement..........
