Meet the team tasked with saving the UK car industry. Announced earlier this month, the Automotive Council is a Government initiative designed to create long-term strategies for the car industry in this country, and now the all-important members have been named.
The Council will be jointly chaired by Lord Mandleson and Richard Parry Jones, the former vice-president of product development at Ford, widely credited with kick-starting Ford's recent run of class-leading success.
Other experts on the panel include ex-Formula one designer, now working on his own revolutionary T25 city car, Gordon Murray, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover David Smith and Chairman and Managing Director of Vauxhall, Bill Parfitt.
The Automotive Council was formed as a response to recommendations made in an industry report by the New Automotive Innovation and Growth Team (NAIGT), and is due to meet for the first time in December.

Whilst potentially a good idea, it looks like an old boys club.
Why are there no motoring journalists, or even car drivers of distinction on the council. Better still, ordinary motorists who buy the products produced are we not entitled to an opinion?
We can't all be bumbling neanderthrals who don't know how a car works.
I agree 'us bumbling Neanderthals' are not qualified to provide an opinion...'close everything' and continue down that slippery slope to 'Extinction.' After all it is what big brother wants!!
The obvious simple solutions (for a simpleton like myself) have always been ignored in the past, these solutions and warnings were unheeded. Another consultative committee and more money / time wasted...nothing will be achieved other than lining the pockets of committee members and buying procrastination time for the powers that be.. Sorry!!
Sadly another chance missed by the only industry still operating in the dark ages. Another committee claikming expenses and lunch. No doubt we will, see a "paper " soon on the problems of the industry. These are the type of people who have brought us to this point in time.. we have become reactive to trends late in the day and play catch up all the time. The public are tired with technology that rapidy outdates thier purchase.
Why can we not have some "Dyson" inventors and solid proven business men on the council. We do not need time served "auto " people anymore. The future of transport could be bright for all of us of we have the right team leading us there.

I agree with the above.
the government needs to decide which side of the fence it sits, for or against the industry. and do something positive not faf around with another committe which will decide what is wrong and have absolutely no power to do anything about it.
