Audi A8 revealed

Sharper looks, advanced technology and efficient engines for Audi's flagship limousine.

Audi A8

30th November 2009

It's official! Audi has pulled the wraps from the all-new A8 in Detroit, following the the dramatic media debut for the car in Miami, Florida last month.

Measuring 5,137 mm in length, with a 2,992 mm wheelbase, the car is longer than before. At 1,949 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall, it's also slightly wider.

Inside, the A8 will debut Audi’s updated MMI system which includes a touch-sensitive pad that can be used to control navigation functions. There's a new, larger LCD navigation screen, and for the first time, ambient lighting.

Engine choices include a development of the existing car’s 4.2-litre FSI petrol V8, plus a new 4.2-litre diesel offering CO2 emissions of 199g/km and a staggering 800Nm of torque.

Technological highlights include an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an accident prevention system that uses a system of cameras to help the driver avoid trouble, plus a night vision system to help prevent pedestrian collisions. There are also LED equipped lights, similar in technology to those that first appeared on the A8.

On sale in the UK in April, prices for the newcomer are still to be confirmed. However Audi bosses are promising the car will be only fractionally more expensive than the current model when it hits showrooms.

The new A8 also spearheads a new push by Audi on the luxury car market. Later in 2010, it will be joined by the hatchback Audi A7, spied by Auto Express here...

Our images also confirm the design we first revealed in a set of exclusive scoop shots, and show a daring design and an aggressive makeover for the nose.

It's expected that this look will be carried over to the next A6 and A4, due in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

NOT AN S CLASS BEATER

This will never as good as an S Class Mercedes.. Although a huge improvement over the last model. Audi must realise that Mercedes as the flagship model wrapped up.

What?

"Daring design and an aggressive makeover for the nose"? Where? Am I looking at the same pictures? Looks the same as any other Audi to me - a boring front with fairy lights. And Audi drivers are the new BMW drivers. Buy a Jag and be proud.

Opportunity Lost

All Audi's look the same ! The new A8 is a HUGE disappointment. What could have been a class leading design is just a bigger A4 - a design that's been around for 8 years ! Even all the rear lights are the same. No wonder the A8 has never been a huge hit for Audi. Hope the A7 makes up for it.

????

I thought this was supposed to be a new car? In fact it looks older than the last model!!
Get a grip Audi. Your cars dont drive that well and now they dont look that great either.
The only Audi USP is the fairy lights, and that novelty is starting to wear off!

I wouldn't even consider it

What have they done? This grill is obviously oversized. It's screaming "look at me, I want to be noticed!!!"

This car is ugly and boring. It's even uglier with the optional all LED headlamps. I would never even consider it. 7 Series and the new XJ are the real players in this class (S-Class is a bit old now...)

Weak!!

Disappointing. A stretched B8 A4 does not make for a flagship D4 A8. I don't see how the company makes stuners like the B8 A5/S5 and amazing concept teasers for the A7 and then end up messing the standard bearer of the marque. The least they could have done is not make the headlamps look like some weeping willow - is that a crying car??

Terrible, New BMW 7 series, Lexus LS, Mercs S class all trump it for looks

By hugo_b on 3 December, 2009, 4:15pm

Ok really.

BMW has spent two model make overs to recover the frankly awful looking 7 series. The S-Class looks like any other Mercedes out there and while its nice inside its a country mile more expensive if spec'ed appropriately. The A8 is in keeping with the rest of the Audi saloon range. I think Audi have done the sensible thing and kept it conservative. I've owned all three brands and keep coming back to Audi because the bit of the car you see and use everyday, 3 hours a day, the interiors and their options, are the best of the class for the money by far. At 6ft 4" they are certainly the most comfortable.

steve

Audis exteriors are turning out like BMW interiors - the damn same across the board with no adventure at all in the design. Very disappointing, but like all audis, in the flesh they will look very classy and the interiors as usual will be flawless. The best in the world by any standard. Comfortabley.

I like it

Ok, I have to confess that I'm ever so slightly biased towards Audi having owned one myself for 3 years. No, not one of the new shape ones but a '94 Audi 100 Avant and even now see the odd one still around and it still looks good, ageless.

As regards this new A8, yes, I would have one if finance allowed, which of course they never will needless to say, but I think it looks good. Ok, maybe the nose is a little bold compared to Audi's previous designs but I don't think it's that bad. I'd still have one over the equivalent Mercedes or 7 Series Beemer.

Stunning!

What a beast of a car at over 5 metres long. I bet it drives like a dream. I have a A3 and comfort is foremost in these cars. What a stunner!
