Say ciao to Alfa Romeo’s rival for the Volkswagen Golf! This is the first official image of the family star, which was at the centre of a last-minute name change.
Due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, it had been thought the car would be called Milano. However, just moments before the official name was confirmed to us, Alfa bosses decided to change it...
The new name is Giulietta – a last minute alteration that was made following the firm's decision to scale back its businesses presence in Milan. The five-door hatch replaces the 147, and it sports a stylish look inspired by the firm’s 8C Competizione supercar and MiTo supermini.
Up front, Alfa’s trademark shield grille sits between large headlamps, while sleek bonnet ridges and a flowing waistline create a stylish look. Under the skin, the car is based on a new platform, and is fitted with Alfa’s driver-operated DNA stability control system. It also has a limited-slip differential.
Power comes from a turbocharged engine line-up, with an entry-level 120bhp 1.4-litre unit kicking off the petrol range. This unit is available in 150bhp and 170bhp forms, too. Diesels come in the shape of a 105bhp 1.6-litre unit and a 2.0-litre with 170bhp.
A performance Cloverleaf model is due to be launched later in 2010. Prices for the new model – whatever it is badged– are expected to start from around £16,500.

I was owner of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Model 1978. On 4th November 2009 I drove my car to a scrap yard, counting on the benefit of 1.500 Euros of a govenrment program. That was the last time that I was driving this, wonderful for its time, family sporty car.
The new one doesn't look so beuatiful as the old one or as my present "collectors item" Alfa 156. If it is really good technically, then perhaps I' ll change my mind and buy the 220 TB performance Cloverleaf model and forget the Audi A5 Sportback.
I am a bit disapointed but not too surprised as thanks to Auto Express we have seen sneak pictures before. As the driver of a 147 for the last seven years I do want another Alfa and originally hoped the Mito might be the answer, but its a bit small and the styling put me off - (Its growing on me a bit now though)
I can see the likeness to the 147 in the new Giulietta and like the name but I am afraid it is no beauty. Lets hope it looks better in the metal. No doubt I will get one but not until my trusty 90,000 miles 147 has carried me a bit further.
This first official image gives a good impression of the new Giulietta (thank goodness they're not calling it Milano!) I don't understand negativity directed at the name or the looks; after all, it's only about 10 times better looking than (any) Seat or current BMW and Italian cars should, surely, have beautiful names. I agree, though, that the way it drives will be critical. Incidentally, I don't agree with some journalistic interpretation of Marchionne's recent remarks suggesting that the future of brand Alfa is in question; rather I agree with his essential message that Alfa must stop reinventing and become expert at what it is really trying to be.

I think this is a good looking car and will definitely be one I will consider. I am an Alfa fan ever since I had 2 Alfasuds, a Sprint and 2 33's back in the 80's. I have been waiting for a decent medium size hatch from Alfa ever since - the current 147 being too small. However, I am also a big SEAT fan and currently drive a Leon FR, and I have to disagree with Scotital that the Giulietta is better looking than any SEAT. In my view, the Leon is better looking than the Alfa, but looks are a matter of taste, so it is pointless comparing really. To be honest, I like them both, but the big question is will the Alfa be as reliable as my SEAT's (all 5 of them) have been and will it hold its value as well either. Frankly I doubt it and that alone is likely to result in another SEAT when the time comes to change.

Pleased to see the return of the hidden rear door handles, I always preferred the look of the 156 over the 159.
