The next Smart city car is set to be cleverer than ever.
Auto Express has learned that owner Mercedes is joining forces with Renault in a move that will see the new ForTwo – spied testing for the first time – share a platform with the upcoming electric Twizy.
The innovative rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive platform is currently being developed by Mercedes engineers. It can be modified to accommodate variable lengths and widths of car, making it possible for use in the Twizy and wider ForTwo.
As you can see from our picture, the new Smart is likely to grow – just check out those wider wheelarches. The ForTwo is due on sale around the same time as the Twizy, in 2012.
