Here are the pictures that show Mitsubishi is expanding its off-roader line-up... with this compact SUV designed to lock horns with Ford’s Kuga.

Called the RVR, it will reach UK showrooms next summer, following a European debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show.

The chunky newcomer will sit below the Outlander in the firm’s line-up, and should be well placed to capitalise on growing sales of hatchback-sized crossovers such as the Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4 and Peugeot 3008.

As you can see, the RVR gets Mitsubishi’s latest grille, inspired by the Evo X high- performance saloon, and pairs that with a car-like body.

A raised stance gives the driver a commanding view ahead, as well as some off-road ability. Inside, Mitsubishi says the RVR will major on practicality, so expect fold-flat seats and even a boot floor with varying heights. Exact technical details are scarce at the moment, but Mitsubishi claims the newcomer will be very efficient thanks to a range of all-new in-house petrol and diesel engines.

These will include a fresh 1.8-litre petrol unit that’s likely to produce around 150bhp. It will be available with a manual transmission and optional twin-clutch automatic. Prices should start at around £15,000.
