New Ford S-MAX and Galaxy

Revised models on way as firm’s new look debuts

Ford S-MAX

By Dan Strong

15th December 2009

Take a peek at the new-look Fords which will ring the changes for the blue oval in 2010. These are the first official pictures of the facelifted S-MAX and Galaxy – both of which are set to go on sale in March.

The popular models will become the first road cars to introduce the firm’s corporate look – originally revealed by the Iosis MAX concept at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. Boasting revised front and rear bodywork, they also get daylight running lamps, new badging and updated cabins. The S-MAX features overhead storage bins, arear view reversing camera and an optional panoramic roof.

Under the bonnet, both S-MAX and Galaxy models will debut Ford’s new, turbocharged EcoBoost engines. Flagship cars will be powered by a 200bhp 2.0-litre petrol unit. There will also be a 150bhp 1.6-litre motor, and a 163bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel with improved torque delivery from low in the rev range. The automatic Powershift gearbox will be available, too.

While the new S-MAX celebrates the blue oval’s hi-tech approach to the MPV market, the Galaxy is offering more in the way of luxury. Available with new interior trims and colours, plus features including a powerful audio system and integrated roof rails, the car looks and feels more upmarket than before.

There are also some useful safety improvements, with the addition of a Blind Spot Information System and power-operated child locks which can be controlled remotely by the driver.

Even better

Is this the return of lighter interiors? At last!

Trust Ford!

Trust Ford to spoil the front of the one good looking car they make, by cutting ugly gaping holes in it! When will the tasteful aerodynamic look return. I can't wait for manufacturers to fall out of love with gaping air intakes and ugly 'radiator grilles'. We had got rid of them once, now they are back!

Curious feature?

Am I missing something here?
Of the two cars pictures, only the white one (Galaxy?) appears to have the Iosis styled corporate front. And didn't the Kuga get it first?

I'm pretty sure that the white one is the S-Max but I take your point re the corporate front. I've been on quite a few airport taxi rides in Galaxies. It's a great vehicle for the job - comfortable, roomy and yet with a bit of driver satisfaction too (or so they told me).

Sliding Doors

Wish they would add electric sliding doors & electric opening tailgate to the Galaxy as a bit of a distinguishing item over the SMax ... I'd buy one if they did but will go with the Voyager or Mazda 5 instead - much more convenient.

Fresh air

Since the release of these bad boys, no other can touch them. Having said that a breath of fresh air is needed. Same the interior hasn't changed much. Mustafa25, they currentley do 2 light interiors in the Galaxy. dsc25, if you want sliding doors, wait for the Grand C-Max.

The S-Max is designed to be more Modern, Galaxy is more about Luxury, hence the Ghia badge.

New engines, new look, can't wait to see these in the showrooms.
