Honda CR-Z leaked

Hot new hybrid sports car revealed in Honda's official video

Honda CR-Z

By Sam Hardy

04th January 2010

Honda's new sports hybrid has taken its first public bow! These amazing images come from a leaked official video – and they reveal all about the upcoming CR-Z, which goes on sale in the UK in later this year.

As you can see, the showroom-ready version has lost little of the drama that made the original concept so appealing. At the front is a confident face, which features a prominent grille and eye-catching bonnet slashes along with LED headlights. At the rear is a pert tail that draws inspiration from the Insight hybrid and in profile, the Fiesta-sized three-door CR-Z's gets the same striking C-pillars as the concept.

Inside, the cabin draws on themes from the Insight and Civic with a bold dashboard that gets a large central, digital speedometer and rev counter. Flanking this are displays showing the car's battery level along with screens showing energy flow.

Under the skin lies a 1.5-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder engine which drives the front wheels through a manual gearbox. According to sources, it produces 113bhp at 6000rpm and 145Nm of torque, figures that are boosted to 126bhp and 224Nm by Honda's Integrated Motor Assist electric motor system.

That should be enough punch for 0-60mph in around nine seconds. Three modes, Econ, Normal and Sport, change the charateristics of the powertrain and also the colour of the dashboard.

Expect to see the production version at next week's Detroit Motor Show with sales kicking off in the spring. A price tag of £17,500 is likely.

WTF what are you on?

Paint the car white and its more or less exactly the same as the Tokyo show car.....If you have had too much beer, then thats down to you!
Looks likea very pert baby coupe in a similiar way to a Tigra or Puma of the 90`s, but a little less effenimate looking and sits quite squat upon the tarmac...At that price (18,000 approx) I think demand may outstrip supply?

Whens the Mugen one out...maybe with a tuned 150bhp plus IMA of 25extra bhp? NOW THAT WOULD BE AN S2010!

The front grille has to be a disguise... or Honda has miss stepped.

Dash hideous, and would have been nice to have at least some your rear three-quarters vivson. After the latest Civic, it's begining to look as if the Honda designers don't want you to know what's going on behind you!

Having searched for more info on the vehicle my opion has slightly changed. Having seen the Mugen Conversion which looks pretty smart. But you cant tell me that you didnt feel a little let down by these images. I love my Honda's and i am sure that this will sell like hotcakes. But i was shocked and that was my 1st thought. They do say 1st impressions count...

Oh dear! Do I laugh or cry? Do I thank Honda for totally downgrading their highly desirable concept to an over-grown Civic and saved me over £18K, or cry for at last there was a hope of a "decent - environmentally acceptable" concept car that has been extinguished? I had serious thoughts about changing my "best car to date", Civic IMA Hybrid for the new "poser" hybrid. But seeing the images above - having (in my view) ruined the Civic hybrid looks my "Priusing" it (Insight), they have now further dashed my hopes by picking out possible the worse aspects of the concept whilst dropping the more exciting points! So, if it does look like these images, I'll stick to my very nice Civic thank you - afterall, it does have a sports option right there on the gear stick!

A big Disappointment: Is it too late to fix?

I totally agree with Legio: While it is true the pictures really suck, U can definitely tell the body shape has changed; it is now taller with larger glass area which makes the car look now higher than vis., more boxy destroying the original sleeker line. The front and rear facia differ as well. And what is that giant round speedo in the center dash..looks like it will obsure vision or is that the reason they made the windshield soo tall? Honda, U had the right idea with prototype...Why in the hell did U change it? It cannot be more money to produce...Is it too late...can U go back to the prototype?

Still to be convinced.....

This is a cool car - maybe. As a car enthusiast though, I am not sure how a hybrid engine can really perform in a driver focused vehicle. Fine for a practical eco hatch but a sports car?
I agree withsome comments above about that dashboard - it looks far too complicated and over designed and is typical of some Hondas of late. Honda need to rediscover simple clear elegant interior design. They also need to start making the Prelude, S2000 and Integra again to and they might get back some of the clientelle that they have lost in recent years.......

Hail Cancerous!

"But you cant tell me that you didnt feel a little let down by these images."

No, not really my fellow Honda countryman...I think the images are a little bit fuzzy and you cant really see how small or pert(CRX-like) the motor is to other cars, but I think that apart from some minor detailing, its exactly like the concept.(Most magazines appear to agree with my viewpoint!) Think we will have to wait and visit the showrooms for final conclusions!

Performance wise, its not really aimed at being a hot-hatch type car, its a small coupe in the vein of what the Puma and Tigra`s were in the 90`s. Style, desirability and refinement over speed...And to that purpose, I think they have succeeded...If you want a performance Honda, then get a Champ White Civic R,or get a Jap Integra R, alternatively wait for the next gen Civic R due in nxt year or two...No worries!

Above all its the first eco-hybrid sporty-coupe isnt it?....Oops no that was the Insight MK1 of 2000!

Hail Cancerous!!

Why thank you LegiolXHispana.... I agree with you on some of the points you had and hopefully they will have the final production model at the detroit motor show. I would love to have the Civic Type R W/C but i am actually thinking about the economical aspect of my next car due to the mileage i do. I like my cars to at least have some flair about them and it isnt always about the speed for me. ..

What's Happening With Car Manufacturers?

I think I'm in a nightmare!
Just like the new Ford Focus, Honda have tampered with the concept car and come up with something so bad it's hard to believe. They did the same with the Insight!
Jeeeesus let's hope Volvo don't follow this trend with their new S60.
