Save our Saab convoy

Owners stage convoy to show support for troubled Swedish brand

Saab 9-3

19th January 2010

Over 120 Saabs and their owners gathered together in Luton on Sunday to show their support for the brand. Part of the worldwide Save our Saabs convoy, which saw over 5,000 cars in attendance, the UK group drove past the UK Saab headquarters before arriving at Duxford Imperial War museum.

Saab ambassador Erik Carlsson was present, signing car parts and memorabilia before cutting a special Saab cake. Owners and enthusiasts from across the UK travelled to be part of the event, in classic and current models, to show their support for the brand which faces the axe from parent company GM.

The American company has been attempting to sell the brand since last year. A proposed deal with Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg fell through and of the current bidders, only two are still in the running – Dutch car-maker Spyker and the Bernie Ecclestone backed Genii group. Recent revisions to these offers have meant that no decision on the company’s future has been made.

SAVE SAAB

I estimate that there were actually 250 + cars
At Duxford there were 2 car parks and this may cause some confusion as to the numbers

It was a good day, probably made little difference but you never know with events like this. The convoy was mirrored in places as extreme as Bulgaria, Poland (huge turnout and I believe, in the snow) Taiwan, Australia, Holland (another massive turnout) and in other parts of the world.

Organised by Josephine Gatsonides (a relative of the Gatso camera inventor) and she did a wonderful job or arranging things and what a result that Erik Carlsson and members of his family arrived depite the cold and Erik spent a lot of his time signing autographs. What a guy, the big man is.
