It's nip-and-tuck time for the Mazda 6! These are the first images of Japanese-specification versions of the company's Ford Mondeo rivalling family car.
Getting a mild restyling, new direct-injection 2.0-litre petrol engine, suspension changes and a revised cabin, they preview UK models which will arrive in showrooms next year.
On the outside, the 6 adopts the latest example of Mazda's family 'face' with a swooping front grille – inspired by the firm's 'flow' design language – while other changes include redesigned bumpers with extra air intakes, fresh alloys and new tailights.
On the inside, there's a new glossy, piano-black finish for the centre console, some extra chrome trim for the climate control dials, gear lever and door handles.
Under the bonnet, the 6 gets the same direct injection 2.0-litre petrol engine as the recently revised Mazda 5 MPV which will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Other updates include revised power steering and suspension settings to improve handling and ride comfort.

Looks nice, will drive nice, but it will still have Mazda's ghastly Digital Service Record (DSR) so you'll have your arm forced to get it serviced at a Mazda dealer. Be warned, our first Mazda 6 service was £5 shy of 400 quid, our second, (1/3 the cost, done elsewhere) still hasn't been logged with Mazda some 4 months on. Bring back the good old service book Mazda.
That's the problem with Mazda's - they look good on paper but in reality it a different story - I wouldn't touch another one with a barge pole. Servicing costs and their ability to know how to treat their customers when things go wrong is terrible. With this particular car, the cost of servicing and the silly corporate smiley face rule it out for me - on top of the appalling experience I had of Mazda with my MX5.
Strange experiences you guys have. I own a Mazda6 2009 model and am 100% satisfied with the car as well as the dealer and service. Have never had any problems, the car is fantastic both to drive and to look at (first completely trouble free car for some time - have been driving other brands before this). I think the Digital Service Record is brilliant, no fuzz with mileage and service story of used Mazdas in the future. If you don´t want that - you just save documentation of services elsewhere - that´s not a problem, although I wouldn´t service my car at an unauthorized garage.
Have a Mazda6 TS on 2003 but can confirm it's one of the best I've had (944 / 730i / 900SE / Trooper / Outback - will leave you to guess the makes ;-) They have reduced-rates for older vehicles, but parts !!!! Recently needed a throttle-body housing(butterfly jamming) - quoted £600+ ;-( Sourced via scrappie (£60) - cleaned / tested/fitted - AOK. Still - quick (enough for me), safe, capacious (hatch), enough toys, smart, rare-ish, - real Q-car. Luv it.
Yet another Asian car that could pass for a Kia or Hyundai.
No style.
Don;t you mean Kia & Hyundai's try to look like japanese cars.. Well at least Mazda 6 looks way better than a Mondeo
Good products. Good dealership. Reasabonable servicing cost. Reliable. I've no negative comments to make about my Mazda dispite having the odd minor problems which were dealt with efficiently and a reasonable cost I love my car. It's much better that the Ford equivalent.
A nice 5 seat convertible version of the 6 would be great - I would buy one now!!
I have an RX8 (192) and it performs exactly as I expected. This is because I did my homework before I decided to get this car. Servicing costs are competitive considering the RX is a specialist engine, as for competence Mazda dealers are as good (or bad) as most dealers. Reliability? It's been almost faultless unlike my previous Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagon, Citroen or Ford. No hesitation to recommend or buy again.
have owned my 6 on a 02 plate for 18 months and love it! its only a 1.8 so bit of a slug but its fun to drive and cheap as chips to run. its only been in the garage once( minor brake problem) after almost 20,000 miles(im the third owner). i have owned 2 jaguars and a toyota surf (always in the garage and emptying my wallet)! so its nice to have a good all round car. next year i may treat my self to the mps, ive driven one and well, just brill !!
Can't agree with toycollector. I think the asians are designing the handsomest cars around at the mo!
No gaping snouts (Peugeot, Audi) no excess chrome (Vauxhall, Jaguar, Ford). Euro design is going through a bad patch just now. All gimmicks and awkward proportions.
I had a 2009 model 2.2D TS2 163 and it is one of the best cars I have driven (BMW, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, Ford) and the first Mazda. It has great style, good road manners, oodles of overtaking power, smooth gearshift and I always experienced friendly servicing. The Mondeo looks like a baked potato by comparison, is overly big and has a gearshift like a tractor. I'd rather have Asian or Japanese than European right now...Kinetic design my a**e
