Toyota Prius recall

Best-selling hybrid becomes latest Toyota to be recalled

Prius

09th February 2010

Toyota's vehicle recall nightmare looks set to continue. Following the sticking accelerator problem which has affected several million Toyotas globally, the Japanese maker has now announced a recall of its popular hybrid model, the Prius.

The problem, which is reported as a brake software issue, affects all third-generation Prius models built before 27 January 2010.

In the UK, around 8,500 cars are affected and Toyota will write to owners of those vehicles in the next few days.

Toyota said the recall was prompted by “reports of inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady braking on bumpy or slick road surfaces”. Although, the Japanese maker claims there has been no accidents in Europe that are linked to the problem.

All recalled cars will receive upgraded ABS software and the work will be carried out free of charge in around 40 minutes.

Until the vehicles are fixed Toyota has assured customers that the cars are safe to drive.

Inconsistant brakes - safe to drive ?

I don't understand how Toyota can expect anyone to believe that their car is still safe to drive.
If you are braking normally to stop at the correct position behind another car - but the the brake software suddenly decides to back off the brake pressure - you are going to crash into that car in front.
Even worse, if there are children on the road in front - you will probably kill them.

Toyota - the end of bland?

I am delighted to hear of Toyota's woes! As an owner of the much maligned Fiat marquee it is great to see the mighty fall! I have owned my Fiat Punto for seven years and the old 'pasta wagon' is still running as good as new; including the brakes and accelerator pedal!

Hopefully now more people will stop buying these bland old Japanese boxes and look for a bit of flair and engineering ingenuity and buy Italian!

Italian? Not a hope in Hell

Dan126 you probably use your car once per week to keep it like that!
Italian is rubbish in all ways, apart from Ferrari (if you can afford one).
Toyota is still the best. Can work anywhere at anytime of the day. Fiat is one of the worst car manufacturers for durability and relability and many motorists would agree with me.
Honda will finally rejoice now. Take the S2000, that was a car made from heaven. A sports car where NONE of the engines EVER had a fault.

Toyota - "still the best" - if parked up somewhere safe!

I believe Honda are having several recalls now aren't they??!

Forza Fiat and all the other great Italian marques!

Fiat had a slogan "once a fiat owner always a fiat owner" the realization of this became obvious when i tried to sell mine.

An end to soulless cars and heres to passion!

I agree with anyone who sees a car as more than a wheeled appliance. I would not purchase any Toyota or Honda because of what it would say about me. I have had several Fiats in the past, and each was great fun to own, and with no brake or accelerator problems. One £20 fuel pump went into a 127 in 20 minutes, and away I went again. This car cost £80!. Driving should be enjoyable, and not a bore.
