Talk about an ambitious start! Less than two months into 2010, and Peugeot is already taking the wraps off its second stunning new concept.
Hot on the heels of the SR1 coupé comes the 5 by Peugeot – which will star at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. It previews the firm’s plans to re-enter the large executive saloon market.
Essentially a replacement for the unloved 607, the 5 aims to put right previous wrongs in this sector, with a daring design.
The newcomer also promises the very latest environmental technology. It has a 200bhp diesel-electric hybrid engine that offers four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99g/km, or zero in battery-only mode.
As with the recent SR1, the contours of the 5’s bodywork flow smoothly and without interruption, from the end of the bonnet to the top of the boot lid. At the front, new LED headlamps are highlighted by illuminated surrounds that blend perfectly with the overall body styling. The lights frame a unique grille design, also influenced by the SR1.
The streamlined sides of the car are enhanced further by bevelled, brushed-aluminium window surrounds and door handles, while sculpted 19-inch wheels fill the arches.
A 2.0-litre HDi FAP 163bhp diesel engine is mounted at the front of the car, with a 37bhp electric motor at the rear.
This arrangement provides a maximum power output of 200bhp, an electric-only mode for low-speed operation and four-wheel drive when required.
Details of the 5’s interior have yet to be revealed, but it’s understood that the cabin focuses on space and luxury.
