Roadside picnic sites in ‘timewarp’

RAC slams state of open-air rest stops, poll of members reveals strong demand for more 21st century picnic sites

Roadside picnic sites in ‘timewarp’

Fight for your right to picnic! So says the RAC, which has launched a petition calling for the Government to increase the number and quality of open-air rest areas on Britain’s main roads.

Nearly two-thirds of 4,400 members polled by the motoring organisation complained that those roadside picnic areas in existence were unattractive and poorly maintained. In 2008, Government guidelines made it mandatory for new motorway services to provide picnic areas, while encouraging existing sites to invest in them. A recent Highways Agency survey found that of the 72 M-way service stations in England, more than 50 had free picnic sites.

However, the RAC has slammed UK facilities for lagging behind European counterparts. “There aren’t enough, and those there are aren’t kept in good order. We need more, and better, picnic facilities,” a spokesman said. “We’re not asking for something fancy, just somewhere clean and basic, off the road, with seating and space for kids to play.

“We appreciate the Government has looked into this, but it’s clear from our members’ perspective that not enough has been done.” The petition can be signed at www.picnicwithrac.com – which also lists top-rated picnic stops (right).

right or responsibility?

so who messes up the sites except the travelling public? Is it the responsibility of the government to spend money we don;t have tidying up after ignorant louts who leave the existing sites in such a mess? Do you and i have the right to expect someone else to clear up after us?

Yorks

I like the Rest Areas found on German Autobahns. They are very basic (parking; picnic tables; litter bins; not all have toilets; no sales of any kind) but are very well used.

A30 Cornwall

Have just returned from a few days down in cornwall, however they just dont seem to utilise one of their best assets, the roadside views. They either have very high hedgerows or no stopping clearways, for example; A30 outside of Newquay almost a 360 degree panoramic view (only when you drive slowly) nowhere to stop no layby on the top of the hill, no pull in at all. I know its a fast road and they probably dont want anyone to stop but the occassional pull in near a view like this has to be good for tourism.
