Mercedes SLK sheds disguise

The all-new Mercedes SLK isn’t set to make its debut until next year, but the German firm’s engineers are still racking up the miles, honing the newcomer that’s set to rival the latest BMW Z4.

And now the disguise is beginning to slip away, we can see that the SLK shares very similar proportions to the car it will replace. The two-seater has a long bonnet and short rear end, and the folding metal hardtop retained once again.

But we can also see that the newcomer bears a strong resemblance to the SLS AMG supercar with its prominent front grille and LED lighting. The new optional panoramic glass roof is shown on this car too.

The SLS AMG is expected to influence the interior too. A minimalist design and retro air vents are likely to feature, along with the firm’s clever AirScarf neck warmers built into the seats. Headroom isn’t a problem either, judging by the driver’s headgear!

Under the bonnet, the SLK gets a new range of engines. The entry level SLK200 will get the 201bhp 1.8-litre CGI petrol, while the convertible gets diesel power for the first time, courtesy of the 201bhp 2.4-litre CDI unit from the E-Class.

The 300 V6 model is discontinued, but the SLK350 gains the revised 302bhp direct injection V-Series 3.5-litre V6. An SLK55 AMG, powered by the new 5.5-litre biturbo, will top the range.
