It’s rare for BMW to be caught napping. But the German firm has only just given the green light to its stunning four-door Gran Coupe, which will take aim at the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes CLS and Audi A7.
Product development chief Klaus Draeger announced the decision at BMW’s Design Night in Munich, where the Gran Coupe concept made its European debut.
The car will be positioned in the range close to the new 6-Series, and aimed both at those who would like a more practical version of the 6-Series two-door, and at owners considering a 7-Series, but who prefer to drive themselves.
Styled by BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk, the Gran Coupe doesn’t have a hatchback like the Audi or Porsche. Instead, the firm has opted for a saloon bodystyle, which is preferred in the Chinese market, where this car is expected to be well received.
Buyers will have to wait until 2012 for the Gran Coupe to debut. It will share the same engines and front end styling as the new 6-Series, which debuts next year. So expect the usual 3.0-litre six cylinder petrol and diesel units, as well as a version of the 4.4-litre V8 found in the X5 M.
A hybrid version is currently being considered. Draeger said, "Since we use the same drive architecture as the Five, Six and Seven, we are able to bring a hybrid version."

How can a car, that will carry no more than two people (realistically) at any one time, require such a ridiculous length of body and wheelbase to transport them? (in the same amount of space you could probably transport 14 people)
These type of cars are dinosaurs that the Germans appear to be experts in wasting so many resources in making such vehicles...
Vulgarity on four wheels!
If motor vehicles were taxed on size and weight statistics plus Co2 emissions, soon we would see truly energy and resource efficient cars, thats where the industry should be heading!
Small is beautiful and big is obesity!
There's no way it'll be looking that long and sleek when it eventually shows up. Hopefully it will though, be a lot better than Audi's latest effort in this segment which looks like it was designed by Chris Bangle after he'd been poked in the eye with a very sharp stick.
The citroen metropolis project.
It is a nice looking car. Good news for Bond fans, Eon has promise another Bond movie soon. So if it releases in 2012 this can be 007 car. Will like to see him in BMW or an Audi A7?
damn it looks awesome .. far better than rival CLS. i'm afraid though that what will come out will look less than these pictures show.
good job drawing though :)
Actually LegioIXHispana, I have a 650 coupe and can tell you that it has two rear seats that are extrodinarily comfortable, my passengers rave about them. Big?? It's as big as a 5-series but lower. It handles like a baby, and shrinks around you when you drive it. We live in a hilly area of New Zealand and it tackles the roads wonderfully. Have a drive so you can give an informed opinion, not unqualified drivel.
I can't wait to buy the 650 twin turbo V8.
Have a happy day!
Well if they do produce it like this then fantastic. Hope the designers stick to their guns.
