Ford tests new Focus to its limits

Blue Oval’s engineers take to The Alps to ensure next Focus is a winner.

2012 Ford Focus Austria

30th July 2010

Ford reckons is next Focus will be ready for anything. And to make sure its new Golf challenger can cope with any conditions drivers can throw at it, Ford’s engineers have travelled the globe in search of the most testing conditions around.

As part of the third generation Focus development, prototypes have been thrashed over frozen arctic lakes, hammered across the hottest deserts, and driven overloaded up and down high Alpine passes to ensure impeccable reliability and dependability.

Ford uses the Grossglockner High Alpine road in Austria. It’s a 30-mile route which travels through the Hohe Tauern National Park through 36 challenging bends up to a maximum height of 2,504 metres. And with gradients of up to 12 per cent, and the thin air at such high altitudes, the location is perfect for putting the Focus through its paces.

The firm’s engineers spend two weeks at a time driving up and down the hill for 120 miles per day. Both the Focus petrol and diesel are put to the test, but the latest session has concerned the car with the new 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine.

Cars are driven quickly in low gears to push powertrains to the limit. And as if the punishing climb wasn’t enough, some test cars are fitted with wind deflectors which cause heat to be trapped inside the engine bay, pushing the car’s cooling system to its limits.

Ford will also fit its Focus test mules with large water bottles, which mimic the weight of heavy adults, and tow large trailers up the hill at a constant speed of 20mph, as engineers seek to discover how much the powertrain can stand, and how much weight the car can cope with,

Clutches, engines and gearboxes take the biggest pounding on the ascent, and the brakes take an equal pasting on the way down, with engineers deliberately braking late for each turn. Only when the car passes all of Ford’s quality targets can the new Focus be signed off for sale.

Why are they even bothering to disguise a car that they publicly revealed at a motorshow months ago?

Good question

Car manufacturers are a funny lot - although Ford has shown the new Focus at a few shows, apparently 'it doesn't exist' until its proper launch next year.

It won't be shown without a disguise until much closer to this date, which is a shame, as it could we be THE car of 2011.

Could have tried harder!

Tom it probably will be THE car of 2011, which is shame, as it could have had wow factor looks to back up what will probably be the biggest selling family hatchback of 2011. Does anyone in your office know the number of Ford's design team in Detroit? Could they ask the to change the grill, head lights and door mirrors; it looks too much like the current model. And as for the trapizoidial front bumper umm No!! It looks horrid, too fussy and can't imagine it does anything possitive for drag efficiency either

Motor press bought again

No surprise here then.....journalists already convinced its great (sound familiar??? anything with a Ford, BMW, Audi, VW badge).... Well, if they've tested it full of 20kg water bottles, it must be astoundingly good!!! yawn

AY ay hay.....

Even the current model look better than this. That front grill is somewhat strange. But what i really hate is the taillights, i just can't seem to justify that wierd wrapping around corner extrusion. If it didn't have them the back would look like a Toyota Run X. Why cut such a awkward shape from the body shell. They'll probably be expensive too. I have no doubts in my mind that in terms of quality it would do every justice. I drive the current model and reliability is its middle name and i quite enjoy it too. Maybe the ST version would be much easier to swallow that the lesser models with those trapezoidal grills.

The fact that people are making comment in the 1st place is because they are interested and they want a winner and that's why evebodys asking for these changes. The formula was good but now it needs to be better.....
