With not one but two Auto Express New Car Awards, Skoda’s Superb really does live up to its name. But far from resting on its laurels, the Czech firm has announced the addition of the 1.6-litre common rail TDI diesel engine to its Superb range.

The new unit replaces the 1.9-litre diesel, and returns better driveability as well as improved fuel efficiency.

MPG improves by 6.9mpg for the hatch and 5.6mpg for the estate, at 56.5mpg and 54.3 respectively. CO2 emissions also fall from 149gkm to 130g/km for the hatch and 153g/km to 133g/km for the estate.

These improvements don’t come at the expense of power or performance, as the 1.6-litre diesel still delivers the same 105bhp and 250Nm that the old 1.9-litre unit did, as well as the same 0-62mph sprint times.

The Superb 1.6 is available in S and SE trim levels and comes with a five speed manual gearbox. The new unit is available to order from today, with prices starting at £17,480 for the hatch and £18,640 for the estate.

Why not drop that engine in the Yeti?

My wife owns a 1.6 TDI Octavia and whilst its quite nippy on the move, it has a long pause at low revs before the turbo kicks in which can be quite dangerous when pulling out of rolling junctions in 2nd gear. The problem will be much worse in a bigger car like the Superb.
Be interesting to see what its like in the Yeti though, and what emissions / economy it produces - but I suppose since that already uses the 110BHP 2.0 Diesel, it isn't going to happen.
