I was recently asked to compile a list of things which mean more to me than anything else. Placing essentials like food, water, shelter and money to one side, I put family at number one followed by, in no particular order, health, liberty, friends, justice, laughter, democracy, sunshine, long-legged women, tolerance, peace and love (man!), contentment, loyalty, music... and cars.
Those last two may seem comparatively unimportant. But show me someone who hasn’t travelled in cars or heard music, and I’ll show you someone who hasn’t lived. Cars offer freedom and opportunity. Music opens the mind and touches the soul. Is there a better, more enjoyable public event than a major car show? Or a live concert featuring world-class artists?
Well actually, there is. And I’ve just been there, done that and bought the T-shirt. It was the Vintage at Goodwood Festival which took place at the Sussex estate over three glorious days earlier this month. Officially, Vintage is supposed to celebrate half a century of ‘British Cool’ and is as much about fashion, film, art and design, as it is about motors and songs. But the fact is that they all feed off each other, as the festival proved.
