Aston gives Cygnet the green light

British manufacturer confirms production of iQ-based city car

Aston gives Cygnet the green light

11th October 2010

The smallest Aston Martin ever has been confirmed for production! Revealed as a concept in March, the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet will be built at the factory in Gaydon, Warks, in 2011.

The firm was inspired to build it after discovering around 30 per cent of owners have small cars such as the MINI or Smart ForTwo, and use them for short commutes. Each car will be hand-finished with an almost unlimited range of customisation. However, there will be no change to the 1.3-litre, 99bhp Toyota engine.

The likely start price is £30,000, rising to nearly £50,000 with options.

Aston, oops, Toyota Martin!

First of all its not an Aston Martin, its a Toyota, except the stitching.
Second of all its priced like an Aston Martin, although a Toyota.
Thirdly, now I will know who really has money to throw..
Crisis? What crisis?

More Cash than Sense

I suspect they called it Cygnet because it's such an ugly duckling.

You would need to be certifiable to drop £30K on one of these when all of the best equipped small cars on the market cost a fraction of this money.

The most laughable piece of badge engineering since the Riley Elf.

Great car, I've even got the advertising slogan for it:

Aston Martin Cygnet, where money, common sense and good taste all part company.

Madness

You could have a MINI JCW with every option for that sort of (entry level) money!

Mind you, it'd be great to pick up a six month old Signet, for say, £8,000. :)

Perhaps this is the ultimate frivolous lottery winners car?

an overpriced toyota. Having said that the rear and the interior looks nice but the front seems like they tried too hard. i think if Aston really attempted to make a small car themselves then i am sure they would have done a better job and if not that why choose this IQ, surely a ford feista would have gave them more styling options to experiment with. Is this something to do with the EU clamping down on manufacturer's Carbon targets across their range? If this is the case then i think Aston had little choice but to come out with this little car

CO2

I agree - this smacks of average CO2 output fiddling.

hmmmm......

snappyuk,

love that slogan lol, and it fits the situation perfectly lol.

As a Toyota IQ there's nothing wrong with the car at all, it looks ok but as an Aston with a stonking great grille on its nose, no, it just doesn't work. I do think the interior's nice but I think this is probably something which a DB9 owner would buy his offspring as a present for graduating or something because if the DB9 owner can afford to buy and run one of those, then 30k is chicken feed to them. Even at 50k by the time you've explored the options list they would probably hardly flinch. At the end of it all though, nothing can tell me any different, this is an IQ and it doesn't matter how much leather you put in it and how many gadgets and tweaks you make, it will ALWAYS be an IQ. Stuffing an Aston grille on the front just doesn't cut it.

This is apalling - what an own goal, had AM got behind Gordon Murrays T25/T27 they would have had an opportunity to do something worthy of the badge, some real credibility in 'Green' manufacturing, and a chance to make enough syling changes to actually reflect the AM design language.

Toyota has the knack of making the most reliable and the most ugly cars in the World.
£30,000 to £50,000 for a "tarted up" IQ?
Come on Aston, who do you think you are kidding?

Unbelievable Comments

Reading the comments I am amazed to see how many people just completely miss what Aston are doing here. Aston don't care if people buy or drive these cars, if one or two go to rich collectors then it has served its purpose.

I'm their target market and I'm not buying one...

If you own an Aston, you're into cool cars. So, they're right that Aston owners need a cool shopping car.

So, when I needed a cool shopping car, I bought an Alfa Romeo. I'd never buy this grotesque - and I'm Aston through and through.

I need a 4x4 as well, but also wouldn't buy an Aston 4x4 - they make cool coupes.

ASTON MARTIN = PERFORMANCE

So they are going to tart up the ugly duckling IQ with quality materials! The high end grille shouting lavish and expensive. Lots of luxurious leather covering everything inside. Yet the engine will remain the same with the same power output. Ehh, Hello! Power to weight? Does anyone know how swift the standard IQ is? The Aston will be even slower, and God help those that up-spec them to the 50k mark! They might need their DB9 to tow them along! Sorry AM, you went the wrong way with that one! Should have gone to an established maker of classic cars, like Alfa Romeo.

Aston Martin servicing intervals

Wonder how much a service interval will cost with the Cygnet, and if anyone would dare take it to a Toyota garage to goe it fixed! lol
