BMW 1-Series Coupe facelift spied

Minor tweaks to 1 Series Coupe keep it looking fresh, while new tech adds appeal.

BMW 1-Series Coupe facelift front

By Tom Phillips

14th October 2010

BMW is set to release a mid-life facelifted version of the 1-Series Coupe and Convertible. Our spy photographer snapped this facelifted version of the 1-Series Coupe undergoing testing near BMW’s headquarters in Munich. Changes to the stylish three-door are minimal, as demonstrated by the small amount of black tape applied to this car.

Tweaks to the taillights, front bumper and headlights are the only alterations to the car’s exterior. However, the baby BMW’s funky looks still look fresh, with just simple nips and tucks required to keep it looking sharp.

On the inside, upgraded trim materials and a new generation of the firm’s iDrive system, which features BMW’s ConnectedDrive in-car internet access, are expected.

Both the Coupe and Cabriolet will receive the fresh look, and will make their debuts at the Detroit Motor Show alongside the final production version of 1-Series M Coupe.

Call that a facelift?

Those old Bangle inspired designs need a lot more changes to make them beautiful!
I thought a totally new 1 series was out soon anyway?
Shame as the coupe is a fantastic car ruined by awkward styling and a boring interior (like most BMWs).

The black tape is an improvement, they should leave it on!

Tanks For The Facelift

It's still a bit 'turret-top.' Isn't it.

I will go with "Stylish".

Nobody has impacted design, now and in the future, like Chris. Those who say other wise, don't know what their talking about and are talking with a paper a--hole

Facelift?

If this is a stylish facelift, it must have been done by the man who did 'The bride of Wildenstein'
Style left BMW the day Chris Mangle moved in.
Its time BMW realised its living on past glory , and the sheep in mddle management.

Nice .....

The 1er always has been a controversial 'design' car, loved by some and loathed by others. I have recently brought a brand new 123d M Sport and frankly, as a driver's car, it is without any question, the best car I have ever owned and driven. When they first came out I thought they were horrendous, but now I appreciate the subtlety of their design and individuality. There always will be the doubters - about everything - but for me, the new design pictures are yet again subtle and will appeal to those of us who perhaps feel we have taste and want something a little bit different from the norm. As for gavsmit's comments regarding the interior, perhaps he should try VW for blandness, as the interior of my 1er is gorgeous.

Nice...A matter of opinion

I agree in part with privatepaul5: Recently my girlfriend also purchased a 1 series 123d M Sport Coupe. It is undoubtably an excellent car to drive and as per the majority of BMWs, the performance to economy ratio is untouchable.

I disagree with the styling issues and the inferance that those who believe the 1 series is a horrendous looking car do not posess taste. Stating such could entice people to state that the entry level of BMW marques, regardless of specification, is just that - a car marque for those who's funds fall short of what could be considered a 'real' BMW. Some may also say that the car is designed not for the gentleman.

I think opinion is a matter of previous history too - a 1 series BMW interior is perhaps more exciting than many cars, but cars is this being rated against? If it's a car of similar style and price, then the BMW 1 series is bland, definitely not stylish. It is functional and very well made - material quality is excellent.

In my opinion, the car is a typical German clinical product, but having said that, it certainly has it's fans as privatepaul5 and my girlfriend will both proclaim.

Love .....

..... your girlfriend MrWhat101!

In all seriousness, I have to now possibly retract my comments about my possessing good taste, as I can see that was a little opinionated. I do agree with you regarding the clincial product side of things however, as BMW are a typically Teutonic built car; solid, functional and possibly bland if compared to a similarly styled and priced car, but materially sound as the proverbial pound (although at the moment that's questionable too!)

Always been a VW man myself, but defected to BMW as I don't think VW are moving forward enough at the moment and their Golf models are good but not good enough.

Still ugly

nothing more to add, still mis-proportioned and doesn't know what it wants to be.

If you want a stylish small car, there is plenty of choice at the min, the new astra is lovely looking thing, the new megane and leading the way in design (interior & exterior) is the Alfa Guiletta. The 1 series has a long way to go to catch up to those cars with regards ''design'

Gavsmit,

Fully agree with interiors of almost all BMW's (the Z4 been the exception) every-time i climb in to one of our works 3 series it just makes me want to nod off before I have even started the tractor engine up, but as privatepaul says, VW's are even worse, in fact its a problem that plagues all german cars, functionality and no design.
