The early bird catches the worm at Kia! The Geneva Motor show might be nearly four months away, but the Korean firm has just released the first pictures of one its show stoppers - the all new Picanto.

The supermini has been given a major injection of style by Kia’s European design team, under the careful direction of guru Peter Schreyer, who is on a bit of a roll, with both the new Sportage and Optima saloon having been widely praised for their good looks.

The latest model takes its cues from the electric POP! concept that wowed crowds in Paris, with a gaping grille in the front bumper, wide arches and curving C-shaped lights at the back. Neat touches like the fog lights that sit flush with the grille, and the indicators mounted in the wing mirrors give the new car genuine kerbside appeal.

It’s altogether chunkier than it’s predecessor too, although the big alloys and low-profile tyres are unlikely to make production, the Picanto will go on sale shortly after taking its bows in Geneva, with cars set to arrive in showrooms in May.

The Picanto will share its mechanical underpinnings with the next-generation Hyundai i10, which is also due out next year, with an improved engine line-up including an efficient three cylinder diesel. There’s no official word yet on whether the electric drivetrain from the POP! concept will make an appearance, but an eco-friendly model could follow in 2012.

Kia Picanto: now that's what I call an improvement.

If you're in the market for a sensible, small car that doesn't pollute too much, then the new Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 as well as the new VW Lupo will make choosing really difficult. 2011 and 2012 promises loads of new cars for we drivers who think that "small is beautiful" and don't want to squander money on cars which may be more exciting, but at a cost. Kia's reputation for making reliable cars should guarantee a lot of interest in what seems to be a car which isn't a compromise.

False Dawn...

It will never look like that in a million years! This is a DRAWING. It will never translate to real metal. Not pedestrian friendly at the front. It has fat sports wheels which just aint gonna happen! Oh and lets not spoil the lines by putting in any doors!!!

Sleeping into happiness...

It may have escaped your notice Ivor, but none of the worlds volume manufacturers are building affordable cars that exactly set the world alight just now. They are all chasing falling sales by producing cars that are economical to design and manufacture just to stay in business.

Ignore KIA at your peril. They may still have a couple of duds in the range, but they are in the process of re-vamping that range, and more importantly, their image. Remember Skoda? The butt of everyones jokes for so long, they fought and fought to clear their reputation right up until fairly recently, even though by that time they were producing very good cars. Today their cars are eclipsing the best that VW and Audi can produce. Who'd have thought it, eh? I see KIA moving in the same direction with their new products.
