Audi is back in the BTCC. Private team Rob Austin Racing will enter the 2011 British Touring Car Championship with a pair of Audi A4s built to the BTCC’s new Next Generation Touring Car technical regulations.
RAR’s entry will mark the first time the famed Audi name has been represented on the BTCC grid since 1998. In the Nineties, the German manufacturer entered an official factory team, winning the title outright in its first season of 1996 with the A4 and driver Frank Biela.
Former Formula Three race winner and team manager Rob Austin believes "that the Audi will be a race winner."
RAR has placed deposits for two cars which are being built by GPR Motorsport. The image shows a preview of how the car could look when it hits the track for initial testing in early March. The team’s drivers will also be announced in the new year.
The Audis will be one of nine manufacturers represented on the BTCC grid next year, joining BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, SEAT, Toyota, Vauxhall, VW, with more teams being attracted to the sport thanks to the new NGTC cost-cutting rules and continued TV coverage which delivers decent exposure for sponsors.
