20th December 2010

Meet the new baby MG! The MG3 has just gone on display at the Guangzhou Motor Show in China ahead of its arrival in Chinese showrooms in March next year.

Designed in the UK, the production MG3 draws heavily on the Zero concept car seen at May’s Beijing Motor Show. The newcomer retains the modern, angular look of the concept, while many of the car’s on MG’s show stand feature MINI-style graphics which can be added to personalise each car.

The five-door supermini is set to go on sale in China early next year, priced from only £5,900. When the newcomer arrives in the UK late in 2012, its major selling point will be its price, which the firm hopes will undercut major rivals significantly.

The MG3 is similar in size, albeit taller and narrower to the current five-door Ford Fiesta. Just one engine choice has been confirmed so far, a 109bhp 1.5-litre petrol that can power the car up to a top speed of 113mph.

A smaller 67bhp 1.3-litre petrol unit is planned, as is a diesel, although the firm is still looking for a partner to produce a suitable engine. A hotter 156bhp turbo version of the 1.5-litre unit may also be made.

MG’s parent firm SAIC also confirmed at the show that it’s on track to begin UK production of the firm’s Focus-rivalling MG6 in the first quarter of next year. The firm plans to build cars at the old Longbridge site near Birmingham, and will sell its products through Vauxhall dealerships, pending an agreement with GM.

Looks like...

...a modern MG to me - cheap and a little bit nasty!

By BARNEYM1979 on 21 December, 2010, 8:18am

The new MG AstraFabiaPunto

Couldn't they have nicked design cues from a few more manufacturers?
And showing a model with a union flag on the roof is borderline offensive; any car building at Longbridge is likely to be assembly of knocked-down kits so more money goes back to China.

LOOK, IT'S AN MG!!!"

Where???

By sgtgrash on 21 December, 2010, 9:53am

Sorry SAIC - This is NOT an MG! Poor try Shanghai!

You are all right with your comments above - and we cannot all be wrong!

William Morris ( His house - Nuffield House, near Marlow on Thames - is still viewable by appointment ) will be turning in his grave at this travesty!

The MG Car Company Ltd in Abingdon made such great cars and had such a proud history of sporting successes and then to see these poor efforts makes one very sad and angry! I worked there for some time in the early sixties - it was great!

What is amazing is that these bangers are said to be designed in the UK! By whom? They have gone into hiding presumably!

And another first by SAIC - selling an MG on price! Great - this will really get sales moving - downwards!

Sorry but we see NO future for such mock ups and it is very sad to see the name MG being dragged in the mud by such inept stupidity and ignorance.

Designed in the UK - that's pretty impressive!

How many other car brands out there are still actually designed in the UK? Not MINI that's for sure. So I'm willing to give it a chance - British design is pretty good, and I suspect that the Chinese build quality will actually be a lot, lot better than skeptics would like us to believe...after all Apple make all their stuff in China and they're still regarded as quality goods...besides we still think of Mercedes as German, and their RHD cars are made in South Africa!

RE
By the 300 designers and engineers employed in Longbridge at the new design centre I'd guess...?! Ever heard of Ricardo? That's now MG Design..and they're a pretty well respected group of designers.

By steedie on 21 December, 2010, 11:02am

@steedie

Since Apple moved production of their products to China, their reliability figures have nose-dived. I speak from experience.

I'd rather buy a used original 20gb iPod classic (the blue backlit version) that has been well looked after, than an iPod Touch. This model also has superior D/A converters than the current crop, so sound quality is better too.

I have no problem with the Chinese entering the UK car market, my issue is that they are using a once respected British brand to lubricate the wheels somewhat. It's not working, as can be clearly seen in almost every post concerning SAIC's new models. It's a cynical marketing ploy which fools no one...

By sgtgrash on 21 December, 2010, 11:24am

MG.....Who are you kidding?

If thats the best British designers can do,don't bother.
A little bit Golf.
A little bit Citroen.
Chinese Manufacturers have killed off European Manufacturing and have put up trade barriers against our imports.
Lord help the likes of Vauxhall, Renault, Fiat etc.

Could be worse

By ashcolyer on 21 December, 2010, 6:51pm

Would rather do an nut & bolt restoration of a classic kool MGB

This car is an insult to MG, the British designers should be sent to the paddy fields or a salt mine, as they are totally clueless.

This MG is absolute junk.

By Richie767 on 21 December, 2010, 8:34pm

sir glyn

dont say china has killed of the british cars makers ,what about ford ,where are there cars cheaply made ,those frenchies ,,some are made behined the old iron curtian ,,now the japanies cannot make cheap cars so the come from china india ,

Looks good to me!

I rather like it :o)

By PaulVFR800 on 22 December, 2010, 11:48am

Oh dear

Interior looks appallingly cheap and tacky. Hate the black roofed version - just ruins any unity of form it might otherwise possess. Certainly doesn't look like a winner to me unless it comes in at startlingly low price.

By pajbse on 22 December, 2010, 10:46pm

CityRover Mark II

This looks like a half-baked replacement for the ill-fated CityRover and appears as dull and cheap as the original model was.

By erly5 on 24 December, 2010, 1:01am

That's not a MG

MGs were based on family cars, "souped up" versions of them.

That looks like a cheap imitation of something that started cheap.

I think the designers have been held back by costs, because, as said above, there are some clever designers over here.

I also think that the only way to relaunch the MG brand is to to some spectacular cars., they need much more power for a start.

That's nothing to to with the MG brand, its MG bland...

By Richard_H on 24 December, 2010, 5:46am

Lol

Richard, proper MG's were never 'souped up' versions of family cars, you are talking about Rovers and Austins, fake MG's as good as they were. If you do a bit of research into MG you will find that MG made their own cars like the MGB and MG ZB magnette (shared body style with Wolseley 15/50) not just a rebadged Rover or Austin with a body kit. The MG3 looks good apart from the plastic quality of the interior, looks cheap, no soft touch plastics I believe, I hope the UK spec ones have the MG ZERO bonnet and an updated interior.

Nasty

Ugly and 20 years out of date. Nothing good comes from China - even the cotton in their textiles is rough and uncomfortable to wear.

By mannd1 on 25 December, 2010, 8:54pm

Chi-Fi

Oh I don't know, some Chinese high end hi-fi kit is damned decent, ask your average audiophile... :)

By sgtgrash on 27 December, 2010, 7:50pm

My God

Looks more like it's MG Over rather than MG Rover. Call me old fashioned but I thought MG's were supposed to be sporty?. Who is going to buy this instead of an established and respected Hyundia or Kia?.

By LANMAN on 28 December, 2010, 11:39am

characterless

I would rather have an MG metro, more looks than this , are they chinese designers in Longbridge, surely not British!! so sad to think that this will be badged a MG!!!!

By rosscompel on 28 December, 2010, 6:07pm

Is the world ready for another run of the mill compact car? Well I guess it will sell on price, as it’s just another shopping trolley trying to under cut a very big market.
Could the buyer point to one of these cars and proudly say I have an MG?… NO!!! That would be so embarrassing.
To call this car an MG is an affront to MG lovers the world over.
SAIC would probably have better sales if they called it an SAIC, for me they can call it whatever they want, but it will always be just another cheap small car, it can never ever be an MG

i just don't get it

I have a MGF, I always wanted one as they were released when I was a kid. This car says nothing to nobody! who is it meant to appeal to? the MG fan of yesterday, nope!, the MG fans of today, nope! so it will appeal to the cost sensitive market, nope! This car is confusing, pretty much like all the others MG have come up with.

By jonjon00 on 8 January, 2011, 11:48pm

O M G

I think most of you are right. What MG needs is a new sports car to rival the MX5 but not one made out of old bits left over and not a small hatchback.I have a ZR and proud of it it makes me smile and this MG3 does nothing. This company is ruining the good name of MG.

By andrew4071 on 23 February, 2011, 3:34pm

stop Moaning

For God sake its just a car. Stop whining. Its being assembled here, its designed here, someone will buy it because its cheap.
Plus for £5500 which is what its selling at in China its a bloody miracle
