Mitsubishi has confirmed that its electric i-MiEV has now gone on sale in the UK. The Japanese firm began building production versions of the supermini in European spec last October, and now the car has arrived, priced at £23,990, including the government’s £5,000 plug-in car grant.

As of now, the firm has built and shipped 2,500 examples of the i-MiEV and its sister cars, the Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero. The cars have a range of 93 miles and take seven hours to charge from a household plug, although an 80 per cent change is possible in just 30 minutes with a special quick charger.

The UK is one of 15 European countries where the car will be sold first. The other nations are Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Mitsubishi has had requests for the i-MiEV from Finland, Serbia, Turkey, and Slovenia and sales will begin there shortly, before the car is rolled out to dealers in the rest of Europe.
