Four-wheel-drive Ferrari FF - new pictures

New pictures of Ferrari's new four-seater FF revealed, plus shots of the car testing.

Ferrari FF

By Tom Phillips

21st January 2011

It’s Forza Ferrari! Meet the FF, Ferrari’s replacement for the 612 Scaglietti. Not only is the newcomer an all-new model, it’s also the company’s most powerful four-seater ever, as well as its first ever four-wheel-drive car.

The FF - an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive) – is described by Ferrari as a car that “represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution”.

The FF represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution
And that includes an all-new naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V12 with direct injection. The unit produces 651bhp at 8,000rpm and an impressive 683Nm at 6,000rpm. Performance is suitably rapid, with 0-62mph taking 3.7 seconds, and a top speed of 208mph. The 612 managed the sprint in four seconds and hit 199mph flat out.

Drive is fed via a transaxle-mounted dual-clutch F1 gearbox, but the big news is the FF’s patented four-wheel-drive system. Called 4RM, Ferrari claims the system weighs 50 per cent less than a conventional all-wheel drive transmission, and helps to maintain a 47:53 weight distribution, although is yet to detail whether the system features conventional driveshafts or uses electric motors to power the front wheels.

The FF’s drivetrain is integrated with the car’s electronic dynamic control systems, and Ferrari claims it “delivers record levels of performance on all terrains and in all conditions”.

Despite the addition of four-wheel drive, the FF weighs 1,790kg – 50kg less than its predecessor. That also helps curb fuel consumption, with the FF returning 18.3mpg and 360g/km when specced with the HELE stop-start system, down from 13.8mpg and 470g/km respectively.

Completing the FF’s dynamic package, is Ferrari’s latest SCM3 adaptive dampers and Brembo’s new carbon-ceramic brakes.

As for the striking design, the FF was penned by Pininfarina, under the guidance of Ferrari’s styling chief Flavio Manzoni. It breaks with tradition by offering a unique two-door hatchback. The newcomer measures 4,907mm long, 1,953mm wide and 1,374mm high, making it longer, but narrower and taller than the 612.

Ferrari has said that it will never build a four-door car, but the FF does feature seating for four. What’s more, the FF boasts 450-litres of luggage space with the seats up, which is slightly less than a Ford Focus estate!

An array of personalisation options and accessories has been developed for the FF, including six model-specific exterior colours and special leather upholstery.

The newcomer will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, with prices yet to be announced.

Its a stretched Z3M Coupe!

Looks like the guys at Pininfarina took a picture of the Z3M Coupe and just stretched it a bit ...

Even the wheels look the same...

By dave996 on 21 January, 2011, 12:26pm

Just like BMW's Pram, the 1 series

I agree with dave996, they've lost their way in design if they have to use a pig as the base design.

By SmeeInnit on 21 January, 2011, 12:38pm

m-coop in RED!

I told you that the mcoupe design had legs!!!

By nlouw on 21 January, 2011, 12:42pm

Errrrmmmmm?

It looks good from the headlights forwards. C'mon Ferrari, this is tosh and you know it. Surprise me, go on, do something... interesting.

By craiglife on 21 January, 2011, 12:50pm

I prefer my version of it...

Totally agree with the BMW Z3M Coupe comments.

I thought to slightly modify it to get it looking back to how Ferraris are usually perceived http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/sti2000uk/Ferarri_FF2.jpg

What do you think?

By sti2000 on 21 January, 2011, 12:51pm

And another thing....

Just who is supposed to be impressed about the luggage space being just less than a Ford Focus Estate. The Ford driver who thinks he's somehow fast and roomy because his boot space beats a Ferrari's - or the Ferrari driver who's wheels are now being compared to a budget estate car?

Fug me! That's one uckly looking car - moreso that it's wearing the haloed Ferrari badge.
Anyone who buys that needs slapped repeatedly to wake them up from their nightmare dream!

By pjskelti on 21 January, 2011, 1:15pm

Jenson who?

and there I was thinking FF stood for ferguson formula.

By fleabane on 21 January, 2011, 1:17pm

Not instantly Beautiful but grows on you.

The more I look at it, the more, Im getting to like it. It's got character.

By JTravolta77 on 21 January, 2011, 1:17pm

Name by Jenson, rear view by Lotus Elise and side view by Reliant Scimitar

By phil_h2 on 21 January, 2011, 1:19pm

Royal approval?

I'm sure the Princess Royal would approve - this Ferrari FF appears to be a re-take on the Reliant Scimitar GTE that HRH was driving over 40 years ago, except it's red! Well done, Pininfarina!

By dryribs on 21 January, 2011, 1:25pm

You're kidding?

Actually, from A-pillars fwd it's OK. Front & rear are OK.
I have always had a soft spot for 4-str Fezzas (400/456) but this looks all wrong.
sti2000 - Yes, that looks a lot better, but can you get in the back without removing your hear first?

By roger_walker1 on 21 January, 2011, 1:38pm

not a bad looking car but surely 4 seater would be ideal with 4 doors. if they stretched it out like a limo and made it a rapide competitor then they would sell more. the idea of buying this and then pulling seat forward to get into the back is hardly a price tag worther paying for if you will try to get out from the back with your dignity intact. bring out a foor door saloon. if Aston Martin have done this, porsche with their ugly duck, Maserati so is lambo then surely Ferrari can too or don't they have the technical expertise to do a long car?

An Improvement on the FF????

I want one in black....

Ok - I want one in black ...and I want it to be stretched too. Only then will it be a hearse to die for!

By ceebeegeebee on 21 January, 2011, 2:55pm

Panamera disease is spreading

Oh My God!!!!! Its true the Panamera virus is contagious and spreading. Ugh.

By JLOWE99 on 21 January, 2011, 3:04pm

Is it me or does it have bits of Alfa- it looks like a lengthened MiTo with some added creases and Ferrari badges

By car_mad on 21 January, 2011, 4:15pm

hmmm......

sti2000,

yes, I prefer your version, shame they'd never agree to produce it. I can see where the Scimitar comments come in, though I'm not so sure about Alfa Mito lol. Panamera? Nah, not even Ferrari could get THAT ugly. Then again, with styling from Pininfarina anything's possible lol.

By nick7 on 21 January, 2011, 4:46pm

'Forsa' wurst...

"I told you that the mcoupe design had legs!!!"

I'm assuming you meant this in much the same vein that a "Daschund" also has legs, kinda... ^^

By sgtgrash on 21 January, 2011, 4:51pm

Cutting Edge...

For those who mention the Reliant Scimitar:

The Scimitar has one thing over the 'FF'... Looks... :)

By sgtgrash on 21 January, 2011, 4:54pm

Some people might not agree with this, but I personally think this is the sexiest Ferrari ever made! Just tell them to watch out for Pagani and Lamborghini in Geneva, though.

By JPW2010 on 21 January, 2011, 4:57pm

Ignoring the - err - challenging side view...

I see epic fail in the Halloween pumpkin face on this car. Of course it will sell in droves to the rich and tasteless, but it's no classic.

By snappyuk on 21 January, 2011, 5:48pm

Thanks

Cheers nick7

Sometimes baffles me in life how companies can allow things like this to happen. Ok there are some that like it but it just looks like an elongated Z3M Coupe and seems out of proportion.

Oh well, if Ferrari are reading this and want to tweak it, check out my pic

By sti2000 on 21 January, 2011, 6:08pm

Jenson?

Errr ... fleabane - I think you mean Jensen - the manufacturer of the mighty Interceptor, nothing to do with Mr Button.

Yes, the 612 follows the basic layout of many good cars over the years, including the Interceptor (as a kid, it was my dream to own an FF), the Scimitar (which I owned from 1980 - 1990), and the Beemer coupe. How is it that the great people at Maranello have managed to make their new offering so much more ugly than any of those others?

By paobell on 21 January, 2011, 6:39pm

NOT how a Ferrari should look!

Agree with all the BMW comments, it's a spitting image of the Z3.
Sounds great, looks hideous.

By anthonyhill2 on 21 January, 2011, 7:52pm

Dave (Ireland)

I take it all you lot leaving the "ugly" car comments didnt actually watch the video feed with the car in a beautiful metalic dark blue at the end? Come on folks!! It's beautiful and listen to the purr of that engine.

By Dave_ie on 21 January, 2011, 7:54pm

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

It's not Ferrari's best, but then again, it's still pretty sexy. I like the SB concept, always have. This is much more attractive, in my beholding eyes, than the Scimitar or others. I have to go way back to the 1972 Chevrolet Vega GT Kammback 2 door wagon, to find an SB design that was this good looking. Unfortunately, it was a highly flawed design and poorly executed. They've been a favorite of hot rodders for years, swallowing up a big block Chevy motor with ease. They were quite good in the handling department, but alas, really shouldn't be mentioned in the same article as the Ferrari.

By thewizardofaz on 21 January, 2011, 8:25pm

Tazio

Luggage space slightly less then Ford Focus, this is what we've been waiting for 100 years, a Ferrari with the purpose. It seems it's true what some say about 2012, this is really end time

By Tazio on 21 January, 2011, 9:44pm

I love it

You can check out an improved version above. I modified the roofline to emulate the iconic 250 GT Berlinetta. Still seats four, ala Porche 911 S4. Smaller people can sit in back. Comments?

By Peter_Tremulis on 22 January, 2011, 1:38am

Pretty sure I know what one of the Fs stands for...

Fugly.

You know, I think I've just worked out what the other one stands for too now.

By Dangerous_Dave on 22 January, 2011, 9:44am

I would have prefered Ferrari to build a 5 door Estate instead.

I think it's very challenging to build a beautiful 2 door 4 seater Sportscar with plenty of rear headroom and a large boot. I think It's succeeded as a Shooting Brake / Breadvan Design but I think a 5 door Estate Design would have been more attractive and stylish.

By JTravolta77 on 22 January, 2011, 1:12pm

Forget the car.....though not bad from the front? What is the music that goes with the video....love it!

By Lostash on 22 January, 2011, 5:35pm

who said record levels of performans

in the video the ferrari rides in snow about 10-20km per hours-in normal racing pist 180km ...yeah really great performance and superbad styled FF (final fantasy)car.

By perperek on 24 January, 2011, 12:34am

oh dear

it looks like

smart coupe+ m3 coupe + any modern lotus

what a load of crap!

there will only ever be one 'FF" and that was made by Jensen

It isn't particularly pretty to be honest, it has some nice elements but as a package its not great.

I do think technically its very interesting though, I'm keen to know more about Ferrari's take on FWD.

I was about to say it seems quite hard to combine the super car and a four seater.

But then I remembered the Masser gransport, which I think is very beautiful and is a true four seater.

By nickeroo on 25 January, 2011, 1:34pm

who is true Montezemolo-Ferrari

The wolf changes the hair but not the defect: in my domain www.fabrizioromanolibri.com/2011.mht , a Muslim girl torn apart by bombs manufactured by the toy Valsella Fiat Spa, a company headed by the Fiat / Exor, assembling the mechanical parts and chemicals from by Iveco and Fiat Bombrini Parodi Delfino , jointly held by Barbara Parodi Delfino, the companion of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, first manager and owner of Ferrari Automobili. In short, a lousy deal that was to remain in the home. Fabrizio Romano

458 Estate?

Looks just like the 458 in the head on shot, cant beleive anyone would suggest that is a bad thing!!

By AndyG on 26 January, 2011, 1:07pm

What's in the name?

FF? We are told FF is an "acronym for Ferrari Four"... meaning it's full name is called the Ferrari Ferrari Four. WTF?

By ARI_Boy on 27 January, 2011, 10:37am

Ferrari

I guess most of the comments are from people who will never own a Ferrari........Great car I've already test drove the California

Waaaat

I love it, If I could have a Ferrari its what id buy. Beautiful :)

By Leonidas on 27 January, 2011, 11:32pm

Reliant anyone?

Does this look like a Reliant Scimitar taken to the unltimate modern design? Or is it just me? I will get my coat, sorry.

By cambiec on 29 January, 2011, 3:39pm

Its been to that bloody Porsche factory, and they stuck it on the line that makes those ugly Pana somethings, and just took out 2 doors, and successfully buggared up the back. Well done, what a hideous looking thing!! I can see faint memories of the Reliant Scimitar in it all. Just like you Cambiec, ha ha

BMW M Coupe

a Ferrari I'd buy!
Can't help thinking on incredible M Coupe (one of alltime finest)

By alexgreis on 30 January, 2011, 11:00pm

Half Ferrari half Alfa

was very unsure when see the first pics on this car. I'd be interested to what sort of people in will appeal to? At least the 612 had a proper GT look about it. This looks like some who owns an Alfa has decide to change the front with new Halfords headlamps and add an aggressive body kit.

However having said that i kinda like it and i'm warming to it's style and look, i sort of feel sorry as it's confused on what is wants to be, Focus rival or Every other 4 seater GT?

By dan123 on 1 February, 2011, 12:57pm

I like it. Yes it looks kinda... Ok more than kind, very M Coupe like but it's different and nowhere near as ugly as a Panamera.

Weclome to the 21st Century

It's about time Ferrari came out with a drive train to match their excellent engine. Seems they are becoming fast followers to Lambo who won't leave home with out it since they discovered how much better it made their cars. They all learnt fast from the Japs who offer 4WD on all their cars optionally.
