Mazda MX-5 production passes 900,000

World’s most popular Roadster sets production record after 21 years, 10 months.

The Mazda MX-5 keeps going strong! The 900,000th example of the two-seater roadster will roll off the production line today, 21 years and 10 months after the first MX-5 was built back in 1989.

The MX-5 is particularly popular with British buyers, with 10 per cent of global sales and an impressive 40 per cent of European sales happening within the UK. The roadster is also the longest-running Mazda model in the firm’s line up.

In the year 2000, the Mazda MX-5 was initially certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s “Best selling two-seater sportscar” when production reached 531,890 units. 

Since then, Guinness updated the record when production passed 700,000 and 800,000 units, and Mazda is in the process of reapplying to Guinness World Records to have the record updated once again.

The current range costs from £17,975 to £23,205, and includes a pair of special editions – the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre Miyako models.

1000,000 soon?

Just goes to show that producing a normal shaped car results in strong and sustained sales. I am so glad that Mazda have kept with the original concept (more or less) and not gone with the wide blobby, near forward control of so many new cars. Also, sticking with rear-wheel drive has been shown to be the right decision; it would have been very easy to give way and make the latest version front-wheel drive.
Well done Mazda and congratulations!

Worst car I've ever had

My MX5 Cabriolet Coupe was the worst car and car ownership experience I've had in over twenty years of driving.
The car, the dealerships and the manufacturer all let me down badly - ruining my once in a lifetime treat to myself of owning a sportscar.
Bit of a bitter pill to swallow that most other people think they're great but that's probably where the problem lies - when Mazda do make a rubbish one, they don't know how to treat their customers in a professional way to deal with it correctly.
I'll never buy another Mazda - and if you're thinking of buying one, hopefully you get a good one because Mazda's customer service is awful if anything does go wrong.
Shame Toyota don't make the MR2 anymore.....
