The C-Class Coupe is powering up! Meet the flagship version of Mercedes’ new two-door Coupe line-up. The AMG model arrives in July and features the firm’s venerable 6.2-litre hand-built V8 under its bonnet.
Unlike the larger CLS63 and CL63, the C-Class Coupe AMG sticks with the larger, naturally aspirated engine used by the current C63 saloon and estate models, rather than the new biturbo 5.5-litre unit.
In the C-Class Coupe, the engine develops 451bhp and 600Nm, which allows the car to sprint from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and hit a limited 155mph top speed. The engine features a Controlled Efficiency mode, which returns 23.5mpg and 280g/km.
An AMG Performance Package is available which adds the forged pistons, uprated conrods and lightweight crankshaft used in the SLS supercar’s engine. This lifts power to 480bhp. Torque remains unchanged, but 0.1 seconds is cut from the 0-62mph time.
The Performance Package also adds composite from brake discs clamped by red-painted calipers and a sports steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara.
Both models feature the AMG Speedshift seven-speed automatic gearbox as standard, and get the same rotary control for adjusting the transmission settings as the SLS. In S+ mode, gearchanges are completed in just 100ms, and launch control is also included.
The C-Class Coupe AMG gets a different suspension setup from the rest of the range; larger, more powerful brakes and a specially calibrated sports steering system.
To distinguish the AMG model, it gets a new front bumper, different LED daytime running lights and an aluminium bonnet with a pair of ‘powerdomes’ creased into it. AMG badges, lightweight alloy wheels and a rear diffuser are also included.
Inside, the car gets similar dials to the CLS63 AMG, sports seats with a range of upholstery options and a sports steering wheel, while all of the safety equipment from the C-Class Coupe range is also included.
Prices for the AMG model are yet to be confirmed, but are likely to be somewhere in the vicinity of the BMW M3 Coupe, which starts at £54,545, and the Audi RS5, which kicks off at £58,685.
