Jaguar’s XF is facing up to the competition with a new, smaller diesel engine. The downsized unit should markedly increase the XF’s appeal in its core European market, which will be boosted by the arrival of an estate model by the end of the year.

The new unit is part of the XF facelift, spied here at Banbury services by reader Richard Thomas. It will see the Ford/PSA-developed 2.2-litre oil burner added to range. The engine has been revised for its new application in the XF and the new Range Rover Evoque, where power has been upped to 187bhp.

To ensure that the engine is as clean as possible, it features stop-start technology and drives the rear wheels through the slick ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox which debuted in the Range Rover TDV8. The firm may also offer the lower power 148bhp unit which emits less than 130g/km.

Complimenting the new engine is revised front and rear end styling, which will bring the car’s looks into line with the new XJ.

The facelifted model is set to arrive at the New York motor show, while the diesel models and the wagon are likely to follow at its European debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the autumn.

Power upped?

The latest 2.2 PSA/Ford diesel is already available in the Mondeo with 200bhp, so I think someone may have got the figures wrong. Either that or this is the previous generation 2.2 which standard had 175bhp so 187 would be a gain, but its an engine that has already been superseded, so why are they putting it in?

i wish the grill had a more flat slab face stance rather than a sloped look. it would have good strong road presence with a powerful look. all in all a good looking car. would buy one any day without question, if only i had the money :(

with the car weighing around 1500 to 1700kg approx i would think the power figures are wrongly qouted it must come with at least 210bhp otherwise its rather pointless, you might as well go for the V6 diesel got ample spare power and good economy.

I hope it has a rear more like the Xk than the XJ. Jaguar's XJ looks a bit weird, funky, but weird. I would rather the XF follow the XK for its looks.

In Sept 10 AE you told us [about this facelift] "but no new engines", so............did Jaguar just pull the wool over youre eyes?? Or did they wake one night, between now and then, and go "oh buggar it, think we might stick that 4 pot from Ford in it, for luck". Nope!! Why dont you get a reliable mole in a few big companies so you can get some 'real' hot tips etc.
Hey-Zeus fellas, you are copping an enormous amount of flack in all the articles I read, and they aint polite discords about merit, theyre sticking it up you about accuracy and integrity. Please, perhaps a look at your journalistic standards may be appropriate. The 'raving red necks' [yeah, I'm one too] that post here are all passionate about cars. I'm sure many also buy the mag, which is really what its all about isnt it. Hitting the right demography in volume to justify big ad rates.
Whatever you do, I hope its the right move.
