1,000 jobs saved at Vauxhall’s Luton plant

Firm confirms that next-gen Vivaro van will be built in Luton, safeguarding 1,000 jobs.

Vauxhall Movano

24th March 2011

Vauxhall has confirmed that the next generation of its Vivaro van will be built at its plant in Luton, Bedfordshire. The move safeguards up to 1,000 jobs at the facility which will build the next generation of the Movano from 2013.

The van is the sister vehicle to the Renault Trafic, which will be made at Renault’s Sandouville plant in France, along with a high-roofed version of the Movano.

The announcement follows Renault and Vauxhall’s joint confirmation that it would continue its agreement to co-develop light commercial vehicles, which was signed in September last year.

The agreement has been in place since 1996, when the firms introduced the Vauxhall Movano and Renault Master models. The Vivaro and Trafic were first made in 2001, and over 1.25 million examples have been made.

Vivaro and Trafic Vans - what does the future really hold?

Vauxhall and GM will certainly have to be technically really first class in not only designing but building their new vans in Luton!

This new GM/Renault van generation will be in direct competition with the new generation of Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter coming out of the superb modern plant in Dusseldorf that is garing now for higher production and sales not only in the EU but outside of this including the USA!

Over to you Luton - the ball is very much with you!
