Audi sets sights on BMW X6

New Q6 coupé SUV follows trail blazed by X6 , four-wheel drive and hybrid power on cards

Audi sets sights on BMW X6

The X6 is under attack! In its quest to fill every niche in the premium market, Audi is preparing a coupé-style SUV, likely to be called the Q6 – and our exclusive images show just what to expect.

The newcomer will be gunning for the controversial BMW X6, which has proved a runaway
success, selling more than 110,000 units. It will be based on the same platform as the new VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, itself a shortened version of
the Audi Q7’s underpinnings. Sacrificing some of that model’s huge load space, the Q6 will compensate with more style.

As our images show, the Q7’s blistered wheelarches and crisp surfacing will be carried over, but the smaller car will sport more steeply raked screens and a plunging roofline. Wraparound tail-lights and a curved boot spoiler create a visual reference to another Audi coupé, the A7.

While the front passengers
will enjoy the same space and ambience as those in a Q7, the rear bench will be squeezed down to only two individual seats. Boot space will also be reduced, thanks to the lower and sleeker roof. Engines will include petrol and diesel V6s, while the same supercharged V6-electric motor combination as fitted to the Cayenne and Touareg hybrids is also on the cards.

All models will feature permanent quattro all-wheel drive as well – with the aim of boosting on-road stability more than mud-plugging ability.

There are even whispers of a flagship Q6 arriving later on, with the brand new 4.0-litre V8 turbo which will debut in the Audi S6 and Bentley Continental GT later this year. For proof that the market exists for such a car, just look at the 547bhp BMW X6 M – more than 3,000 have found homes
globally since it arrived in 2009.

Due to the success of large cars such as the X6 in the Chinese market, it’s possible that the Q6 will make its world debut in concept form at next month’s Shanghai Motor Show. It should hit dealers late next year.

Oh dear....

One question.....why? If you want a coupe, buy a proper coupe. If you want a chelsea tractor, buy one. Utterly pointless and I'm lost for words for how ugly this and the X6 are - vomit inducing!

Another Audi ...

... and another pointless niche created and filled.

Yawn.

It would better if they (along with the rest of the VAG Group) concentrated on producing for the UK, rather than starving us of, the models that people are trying to order but having to wait an eternity for because they have more profitable markets. I can't really blame them for that per se, but they should also remember the job that the UK has done for Audi over the past 10 years too.

Our customers are being offered, and buying, Alfa Giulietta's instead of Golfs and A3's, and C Class/E Class and 3/5 Series instead of A4's and A6's.

If only the UK public knew how they are manipulating the supply to the market at the moment they would think twice about buying anything from them.

Ugliest Audi yet!

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but this is the Ugliest Audi yet! What a pointless shape!

Calm down.

This is not an Audi. It is yet another A.E figment of imagination photoshopped.

By Tazfan2 on 31 March, 2011, 12:15pm

Even uglier than the Q7 ????

I did not think Audi could create a more UGLY vehicle than the Q7!!

Well done Audi - you succeeded.

By Bloodyannoying on 31 March, 2011, 12:23pm

Oh...

From the side it reminds me of a Mondeo on stilts. As for the grille, it's a bit coffin-shaped. Order in black for the ultimate all-terrain luxury funeral limo, then?

Ugliest Audi yet? No: it's the ugliest Audi yet.

Seriously ugly. Some of Audi's Vorsprung needs to come from Esthetik. Selling on Technik alone must surely be wearing thin. The three-quarter front view makes me think that Audi have given the job of Head of Design to Robert Crumb. (That could really be interesting.)

Does my bum look big in this?

You got to laugh. Stop it Audi... You're killing me.

By craiglife on 31 March, 2011, 2:31pm

Yeah but... no but...

Tazfan2: Wise point, but AE's forecast pictures of new VAG models are very close to the real thing.

By ThatOne on 31 March, 2011, 9:35pm

i'll wait..till

@ tazfan2... yes your right its not the real photos of the up coming Q6...its renderings from AE...so i;ll wait to see the real pics before i comment...

By autounionDI on 31 March, 2011, 9:36pm

Oh Autoexpress...

what are u doing? i am sure u can do much better than that.
that´s a Q7 that had sex with the new A3 sedan concept,
a horrible rendering!!

WHEN WILL YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND???

Car makers are not non profitable organisations. They exhist to keep people in their jobs, to produce what the consumers want and last but not least to make as much money as they CAN!!! It's like our clothes, when we go to pub, they are not as comfortable as they used to be 30 years ago, but they are much more pretty at the eye. (clothes, shoes, and lots of things). People buy these cars because they want to bee seen. These dont buy ford mondeos like u or me. So stop saying ugly for a car if u cant afford one !!!

The X6 has grown on me over time. Yes its pointless but so is almost every car if you think about it (we could all just drive Dacia Logans and get from A-B no problem...). This looks like a tank from the front but so does the X6. OK its an artistss impression but I imagine its's quite a good prediction for how the car could look if Audi do something like this. Back view looks nice IMO- sleeker than X6.

By uncle_paulie on 1 April, 2011, 10:30pm

Umm, AE where did the X6 "blaze a trail"?? Made 110,000 [in the States at the plant for the X5??] and 109,000 sold in the same land of no taste? Oh, sorry, and some to the Chinese. The X6 came from wherever they make the X5, then went to the worst 'chop-shop' in America and came out beaten to death with the UGLY STICK, as the X6. [Just might be wrong on which UGLY factory the X6 comes from tho].
PLEASE PLEASE AUDI, dont unnecessarily inflict this on the world. You have NO reason at all to be up the bum of BMW, slavishly following them. I've had a complete gutsfull of companies not only filling niches, but then going about making them. The person that thinks car makers produce what we want is seriously deluded. They are driven by the FAG Syndrome [Fear And Greed!!], first, middle, and last. BMW personifies that modus operandi. Where I live there is a big Muslim population with some attraction to big AWD 'bulldozers. I have the misfortune to see regularly 2 X6's. One poor owner got the 'appliance jobbie'......in white. They forgot to paint it as it left the factory. The other is black, and as ugly, and totally irrelevant.
Audi have the Q7, the Q5, the Q3, then s/wagons [Avantes] so why this??

By barina47 on 4 April, 2011, 1:52am

Oh God not another one

Oh dear....
As if one super ugly SUV/Coupe on the market wasn't bad enough, now we're gonna have to look at another one.

Please, Audi, spare my eyes

By Anomalee on 6 April, 2011, 12:20am

Please don't do it!

The Q7 is bad enough, but this is a step too far. Leave this niche to BMW.
