Audi reveals new pictures of updated A3 family and R8 GT Spyder

New Audi A3 sketches saloon

By Luke Madden

11th April 2011

Take a look at the first pictures of Audi's new A3 family! Previously only revealed in concept form as a saloon model at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi has now revealed sketches of the production saloon and three-door hatchback variants.

The styling is characterised by Audi's new face, previously seen on the new A6. That means a set of new angular headlights and a hexagonal grille as well as a pair of large air intakes mounted either side of the front bumper.

A bold crease runs the length of the side of the car, along with deeply carved flanks.

Audi has also released a sketch of the A3's new interior which gets an A1-inspired makeover and benefits from Audi's all-new MMI system. Where the A8 and A7 use a standalone trackpad on which drivers can 'write' in sat-nav destinations and telephone numbers, the new system incorporates this into a large scroll wheel mounted in the centre console.

The German firm is yet to confirm the saloon model for the UK, and hasn't showcased a five-door sportback model either. An official unveiling for the new models is still around a year away, with the hatch likely to bow in at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012 and the saloon to follow in Frankfurt.

Along with the A3 sketches, Audi also revealed a Spyder version of the limited edition R8 GT. The hard-top model was limited to 333 models world-wide and it's likely the soft-top will be just as exclusive. Expect a price tag of around £150,000 when the newcomer goes on sale early next year.

Oh god, the curse of Audi design kills again

So, Audi will replace their A3 with a smaller A4, much like they replaced the A6 with a larger A4 and the A8 with an even larger A4. Then of course are the sportier attempts such as the Audi A4 based A5 and the bigger Audi A4 based A7. Of course i'm almost overlooking the shrunken, tumble-dryed, Audi A4 based Audi A1. Odd then that the only car on the market that really looks like an Audi A4 should be the Seat Exeo.... Oh, I get it, Audi are trying to take over the word with the, you guessed it, Audi A4. Come on Audi, this is taking the f*****g piss surely?

Sketches!!!

Is that all Audi can give us of the new A3, sketches!
Audi have the delayed the new A3 for too long.
I have had two A3's and been very pleased with them but I'm not having another of the old design just because Audi can't get the new version out on time. Looks like a BMW for me.

Yawn....

Do Audi have a template on tracing paper that the wheel out each time they are replacing one of their cars? Looks exactly the same as the last one to me. Lazy VAG design!

AUDI BASHERS

Here we go again. Every time an Audi is featured on this site, the Audi bashers all jump on the band wagon. Get a life you guys. Audi are increasing their sales every year, in spite of your inane comments. Could it be they are too intelligent to look at this site and have 1, a mind of their own, or 2, they like a good quality car?

Oh, and by the way, I do not own an Audi. Worse luck!!!!

By justeddie on 12 April, 2011, 11:36am

justeddie, I'm no Audi basher, but when seeing this image it struck me just how little imagination Audi seems to have these days. Just because BMW opt's to make every car look almost identical, Audi don't have to follow. Sure they may be selling more and more but then they do now make cars for virtually every market segment - so I would hope they do sell more. It still doesn't justify the complete lack of any design innovation. I know winning formula's should be stuck to, but it won't be long before Audi are seen as dull and samey and rebuilding their past image for style will take more than a few model life-cycles. Just saying. Besides, I am critiquing the design of the car and it's in-bred relatives. You simply post in order to criticise anyone criticising Audi?

By JamesRiley on 12 April, 2011, 1:29pm

No James, in fact your comments were probably the most reasonable and perhaps the most justifiable that I have seen on Audi criticism. What does annoy me is that every time an item comes on this site we are bombarded with comments such as "why?" (A5 Sportback), "not much change" (A8). No one seems to take into account the new technology incoporated in new Audi models. And by the way, it's not just Audi and BMW that are hard to define. At a quick glance, can you tell an Astra from a Corsa?

Erm...

"Could it be they are too intelligent to look at this site and have 1, a mind of their own, or 2, they like a good quality car?"

A mind of their own? If they did they would see past the Audi badge on the front, realise the A3 is a Golf/Leon/Fabia underneath and walk away from the overpriced A3 and buy something more value for money. It's all badge. Badge = Sheep......same thing with the iPhone!

Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo for the money is the best designed vehicle on the market, but would you buy one, yes if you could afford to lose a small fortune when you trade-in and no if you want to make the most of your money spent. Ive owned an alfa and felt the pain of trade-in, loved the car but would never buy another one because of the trade-in values. Audi is building cars for the mass market and have overtaken Mercedes and BMW in worldwide sales, so I understand there design Philosophy, even though I dont agree with their conservative designs. In the idea world you would have the Italians design the exterior, the british the interior design, the Germans the material supplier and suspension and Quattro and the Japanese the engine and electrics.
