It’s classier, lighter and more economical, but the new Audi A6 Avant exactly matches the outgoing estate for boot space.
Now on its seventh version, the latest model plays it safe with a design that only makes subtle changes to the profile.
However, it’s in the detailing that you can see this is an all-new car. Marked out by standard twin exhausts, a small spoiler and silver roof rails, owners can further highlight its classy appeal with optional 3D-effect front and rear LED light clusters.
The wheelbase has increased by more than 6cm to improve cabin space. According to Audi, it’s solely for extra legroom, so boot space remains at 565 litres to place the Avant level with the BMW 5-Series Touring, but shy of the 690 litres offered by the Mercedes E-Class Estate. Capacity rises to 1,680 litres with the rear seats down.
The A6 does have a weight advantage – it’s 205kg lighter than the Merc in four-cylinder diesel form. This is thanks to a 20 per cent aluminium mix for the bodywork, which also helps economy. The 2.0-litre TDI has combined returns of 56.4mpg, and emits 132g/km of CO2.
At launch, there will be two petrol and four diesel engine choices, topped by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 296bhp. However, an even more powerful twin-turbo 3.0-litre TDI will join the line-up later in the year. With 313bhp on tap, it will take the Avant from 0-62mph in only 5.4 seconds.
Delivering power to either the front or all four wheels will be three transmission options: a six-speed manual, the sportier dual-clutch S tronic gearbox and an eight-speed automatic.
Meanwhile, the car’s list of new features includes an automatic boot opener that’s activated by waving a foot under the bumper. Also on offer is Audi’s Google-linked in-car Internet system.
The A6 Avant is set to go on sale towards the end of July, with prices starting at around £32,000 for the front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre TDI.
