Virtual reality safety windscreen

Autoglass predict virtual reality windscreens to become standard safety feature in near future

Autoglass future windscreen

23rd May 2011

Instead of simply protecting passangers from the elements, imagine if windscreens could make your car journeys safer. Well the guys at Autoglass are already one step ahead and have released this concept video of the future of car windscreens.

Providing a snapshot of 2020, this video demonstrates the technological improvements that many manufacturers have already developed, but are not yet using to full potential.

Thanks to augmented reality, displayed directly onto the windscreen, the driver and passangers are informed not only of potential hazards on the road, but also given a large array of information including directions, points of interest and key vehicle statistics.

Dr Chris Davies, head of technical research and innovation at Autoglass explained:

“We already see this kind of development happening, albeit on a smaller scale in some high-end vehicles, but over the next few years we can expect to see this becoming more commonplace for those that are in a position to specify functions on their cars, and in time it may come as standard.

"The information that we see eventually making its way onto the screen will not be any more distracting than the traditional dashboard; if anything, it will be positioned in a way that is more in the line of vision than we as drivers are used to, so may in fact be ultimately safer."

"Driven to distraction"

You`re joking me! Did I see "Pub deal? Steak and chips £6.95"?

This is an example of a driver being driven to distraction. People are using mobile phones, and I ve seen some text at the wheel of their car. How much more information overload can we handle!!?

Other useless drivers already do what sat navs tell them to do even when the sat nav is wrong. Driving up one way streets, or even into the sea.

I have to say wacthing the video. I was more inclined to watch the next text would be. It ruddy distracting. "HUD" or Head up displays arent new. They should only tell you your speed, and speed limits around you and nothing else.

Absurd!!!

.....as already mentioned in the 2 comments above.

Plus> more and more "drivers aid" that are appearing in the new generations of cars are getting absolutely rediculous, taking away the pure skills in driving a car.

Automatic windscreen wipers - if you can't see out of the windscreen and don't know when to turn these on, you shouldn't be on the road. Same goes to auto night lights that comes on when its dark.

Heat air vents in the head rests that blow hot air on to driver's neck when driving in cold weather with the roof down to stop the driver from getting cold - how to waste energy, curtesy of Mecedes.

Blind spot detection light that comes on in the outside wing mirror when another car / motorbike is hidden in this blind spot to warn the driver not to pull out - if the driver can't use his eyes and look properly before pulling out into another lane, they should not be on the road.

Tyre pressure indicators - tyre pressure should be checked regularly as part of the safety and maintainance routine by the owner. An tyre starting to run flat will feel heavy on the streering wheel, does not take a genious to figure out.

All of these so called gadgets are just a way of manufacturers making something that wasn't a problem into a problem, then selling the car buyers a solution and charging an absolute fortune for them. Loading the car with more electronics and hardware, things will go wrong more regularly with visits back to the dealers for expensive repairs.

padding

just an example of autoglass self publicising puff, that says nothing new or interesting. How much did they pay to put that up ??

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Even looking at the video I hardly saw the road. Far too much information, impossible to take in. 99% of it dangerous. If the screen showed next turn and road name or number, current speed limit (if close or over) and highlighted warning road signs such as roadworks, restrictions etc., then perhaps.

I don't know what planet bastinado is on. How possibly are Daytime Running Lights equivalent to this?

This is equivalent to furry dice hanging from the mirror, whcih in my view should also be banned.

Under present laws I hope a windscreen such as this would be banned in the same way as having a TV or DVD player that the driver can see.

I can just see the accident reports - Well Officer, the windscreen didn't tell me there was a party of schoolchildren walking across the road, so I did not need to slow down.
