Vauxhall Astra GTC

By Sam Hardy

07th June 2011

THE fight for three-door ‘coupé’ honours just got even fiercer. Vauxhall’s striking new Astra
GTC is here – and the sporty
hatch sits between two of its biggest rivals on price.

The range starts at £18,495 for the 118bhp 1.4-litre Sport Turbo – that’s £265 more than a 128bhp 1.4-litre TCE Renault Mégane coupé, but £1,080 cheaper than the 120bhp VW Scirocco 1.4-litre TSI. And the Astra will be good looking, too. It’s near identical to the GTC concept car, revealed at last year’s Paris Motor Show, and doesn’t share any body panels with the regular five-door.

Watch this video of the concept vehicle unveiled at the Paris motorshow:

The combination of dramatic C-pillars, muscular rear arches and a rear diffuser has resulted
in a sporty shape. A choice of two trim options will be offered – Sport and SRi – with a top-of-the-
range VXR version due to arrive
in showrooms later this year.

Sport models feature 18-inch alloys and a DAB digital radio, while the SRi adds an on-board computer, plus a leather steering wheel and tinted glass. Bi-xenon headlights will be an option.
Under the skin, the GTC gets the clever HiPerStrut system from the 321bhp Insignia VXR, to improve traction and steering precision.

In addition, the ride height is 15mm lower than the five-door Astra’s, while the tracks are wider and the wheelbase longer. As a result, it should be more stable and have more grip. Adaptive FlexRide dampers, with Standard, Tour and Sport modes, are also available. Engines include the 1.4-litre turbo petrol, in 118bhp and 138bhp guise, and a 163bhp 2.0-litre CDTi turbodiesel. The
hottest version for now will be
a 178bhp 1.6-litre turbo petrol.

The VXR is expected to boast
a 300bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit. It will also feature 20-inch alloys, stiffened and lowered
suspension and bigger brakes.

Order books for the Astra GTC are open now, and it will make
its public debut at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, before starring at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

MMMMMMMMM!

I'm not a Vauxhall fan, but, this is a fine effort and it eclipses the previous generation 3 door, which in itself was a big seller for them. Well done Vaux...... ooops sorry OPEL!

Nice looker...

Continues with the attractive design of the five door.

Just dont try and park it in a regular car space - Astras are sooo wide.

Oh and avoid the donkey engine 1.7CDTi.

chavtastic

This will be driven by the chavs & boy racers who thinks they own the road. Give it a few years, they'll end up in a council estate near you in ambundance.

Bold

Never had a Vauxhall but I must say their rival to the Focus is much more attractive to look at than the boring, bland Focus. Well done for making an effort.

How times have changed...

Its a looker

Probably in the top 3 best looking hatches on sale at the moment. Interior looks a lovely place to be sat too.

BMW could have learnt a lot from this car before releasing the new ugly 1 series.

Now if only VX could make its dealer network look as moder.
Sadly that one is beyond hope!

Couldn't agree more....

Vauxhall / Opel have made a fantastic effort with the new Astra. Certainly more handsome than the Focus, but would i have one over a Scirocco and / or Golf. Being a VW man through and through probably not but it has certianly got me thinking about it. If the pictures of the interior are anything to go by Vaux have certianly stepped up their game with interior styling and build quality. Would like to see how it fairs in the group test.

Nice Looker

Very nice to look at, and as others have said, better to look at than the Focus. Shame the Vauxhall Dealer Network will let it and all other Vauxhalls, no matter how good they look, down. It's sad but true. I hear all sorts of stories from people with Vauxhalls who have had a bad experience when it came time to servicing or something needed doing. Shoddy work, not cleaning the car after service, very expensive for what they are. If Vauxhall want to be a better brand, fix the showrooms and servicing. Their attitude stinks!

Radical

Everyone loved the previous gen Astra 3dr, and this one is by far one of the most radical cars ever built!!!

scott1234 - comments

Neat bit of stereotyping from scott 1234 - you should hear how I now have you stereotyped. It ends with ker

By hampson10 on 7 June, 2011, 7:15pm

scott1234 is spot on with his chavtastic line :O) Recent Opels / Vauxhalls are good looking but are nothing but style without subsance. They're the only mainstream manufacturer in this class not to use fully independent rear suspension and are awfully made. I've owned 2 in the past 4 years and I'll never buy another again. To AndyG - if you even think this piece of tat is even in the same league as BMWs 1 series your insane. It's just a stylish daewoo (sorry - Chevrolet !!)

By AntiOpel on 7 June, 2011, 11:03pm

i think scott1234 is just showing his age with his "chavtastic" comments and antiopel has some seriouse issues judging by his name, but a real nice effort by vauxhall, Oh sorry chevrolet ^^ what a dick,. and it looks a lot nicer than the plain bmw 1 series.

By BizShey on 8 June, 2011, 2:53pm

ANTIOPEL DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARS...

Sorry, but that's what your comment says about you.

Great looking car ~~~ Terrible dealer network

Having suffered at the hands of a Vauxhall main dealer I echo some of the comments above.

The latest Vauxhall's are actually very well put together and rather stylish too, but there is no earthly point in the company enticing people into their showrooms with great cars, only to lose repeat sales by blowing them back out again with shoddy customer service. My local Vauxhall dealer is populated by dodgy 'Essex Boy' secondhand car salesmen types, and that includes the MD. You'd have more success encouraging a PC World employee into an intellectual conversation compared with my attempts to persuade a Vauxhall bod to admit that there is actually a fault with the car.

Hands up all those who've been told by a Vauxhall dealer that the fault is down to your driving style!!!

Hampson10 - Chavs do love luke warm hatchbacks

Sorry I have to agree with Scott1234 it will like all other 3 door Astra's and their ilk, end up driven by a chav on a council estate. I am not a fan of The Megane, Scirocco, or the Focus either, they are all chav mobiles. Give me a C30 T5 R-design if I'm forced to have a hot hatch. It would destroy all the above on performance, have excellent after care. And probably least likely to be driven by a chav.

It's not stereotyping because you can pass any council estate in this country and there are a sea of Escorts, ST24's, Astra Coupe's, Ford Focuses with chaved up tail lights. Meganes also with Chaved tail lights (Lexus style!) Ok then on balance, out of the ones above I'd go for the Scirocco!

By Focus_your_mind on 10 June, 2011, 3:05pm

Yes... A thumbs up!

Quite an attractive looking design by GM! (KIA will undoubtedly steal the blueprints for the design by the time it hits the showroom)

Do hope they badge all sporting Vauxhalls as Opels before too long!

Good compromise between the Frenchieness of the Megane Coupe and the Kraut austere VW...

As for adding to the chav debate... Well most chavs have a class B habit, so that makes five-fifteen year old Golf Git's, BMW 3series (ex Bank managers Wheels) with rust on arches and wheels that are tractor sized, and for the older Chav champsout there, then ten yr old Audi TT's make the perfect companions!

By LegioIXHispana on 12 June, 2011, 4:34pm

General motors...

Great looking car ..maybe a bit too overcomplicated on the dash but I like it!
